Here's a new topic for our pre-season discussions: Can the Bonnies employ VCU's Havoc Defense? We have a legitimate 10 guys that should see minutes this year, which enables our defense to apply a lot of pressure. What do people think? www.coachpintar.com/vcu-havoc-defense/

I hope Bill Shakespeare will forgive me...............
" Cry Havoc, and let slip the wolves of Bonas"
Seriously though, if we have a deep bench anyway, it might be a good idea.

Not bad, not bad. A Shakespearean reference always classes up the joint.

Along with numbers, do we have the aggregate length, quickness, attitude and smarts to do it effectively? If we do, i think it could be interesting!

Like seeing a shot blocker as last line of defense....to be seen who that can be outside of Gregg.

I've said this in another thread, but I'd love to see that 1-3-1 used this year. I think we have the right personnel and depth this year to use it effectively. Schmidt used this to get us back in that St Louis game that Gathers won us at the buzzer.

Ladarien Griffin would have the exceptional length and athleticism to play that role on top

Our 1-3-1 was very effective last year. It's success,in large part, was due to Dion at the top.

Would be interesting, have a hard time believing that Schmidt would employ it though given his history with defenses. And as deep as we think this team could be on paper we still need to see how it shakes out and based off Schmidts' comments to me about preferring to play only 8 or so guys, I would say it's very unlikely. www.thebonablog.com

Obviously not 40 minutes a game but he has gone to it in spurts and has been effective. I would think in the past a lack of depth would have limited how often he went to it - this year depth is not an issue at all - we very well might see the 1-3-1 used more often.

My point is that Schmidt has said, and said again this year that he doesn't like playing more than eight or so guys. It's not something he believes in as a coach. I cannot see a team running a full havoc style defense using eight or nine players every single night. It works at a school like VCU because Wade and Smart play a full rotation of guys. I'm not disagreeing with you that this year's team could/should be deeper. The issue is even with the team having more talent (or so we think) is that Schmidt isn't all of the sudden going to play like VCU and Duquense. He has a defensively philosophy and he's going to stick to it for the most part. Could we see more 1-3-1? For sure. But I believe that Schmidt's preference to stick to a short bench would prevent SBU from pressuring teams for 40 minutes like VCU. Just my opinion though, we can find out for sure in a month or so. www.thebonablog.com

I don't think anyone is saying we won't mix in a little 1-3-1, but keep in mind Schmidt's comments. Doesn't sound like he is going to use the full bench, even though we think this is one of our deeper teams.
