I THINK THAT IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT WE LOOK FOR A NEW AD THAT ALSO HAS SKILLS IN FUND RAISING-IF YOU LOOK AT MAJOR UNIVERSITIES IT SEEMS THAT THE AD SPENDS MUCH TIME OUT OF THE OFFICE WITH PROMINIENT PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY--THE BAF IS DOING GREAT BUT YOU NEED A SALESMAN THAT CAN HIT HOME RUNS--REMEMBER DEREK MORELL--HE HAS THE FUNDEMENTAL QUALITIES FOR AD JOB AND THE LAST THREE YEARS HE HAS BEEN DOING JUST FUNDRAISING FOR TWO MAJOR UNIVERSITIES--I KNOW THAT AT OTHER SCHOOLS THIS QUALITY HAS A HIGH RATING--OF COURSE HE MUST HAVE ALL THE OTHER SKILLS BUT THIS IS WHAT SETS THE GREAT APPOINTMENT APART FROM A GOOD APPOINTMENT

What's with the caps lock? You're killing my ears!
I agree that the new AD should give a hand with the fund raising but I want the focus of the position to be on administering the athletic programs and being an outstanding spokesman for SBU athletics. The latter is something that both Zwierlein and Gothard Lane simply neglected. Zwierlein has basically been invisible. That must change significantly with the new AD. Folks won't give to SBU athletics if they don't know anything about them.

The role of AD's has changed tremendously over the past 30 years. While they used to be an administrator and schedule games, etc., today's modern AD's have as one of their primary tasks that of the major fundraiser for the athletic department. That means getting corporate sponsorships, capital improvement dollars, etc. While I would not expect Plassman Hall to be called the Home Depot Plassman Hall, I can see the Marcus School of Business, funded by a $10 million donation from Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, as well as endowed chairs for all professorial positions. As far as athletics goes, that is a whole different story. There is no reason our facilities can't (or shouldn't) be named aftr a large corporate sponsor. While it was a nice honor to Mike Reilly and his family to have the facility named, the school can and should remove and rename (i.e lease the naming rights to) the facility.

I couldn't agree more to this.....but I don't know that you have to remove the old name. Would it be possible to call it say the "Staples Reilly Center" or the "Cutco Court at the Reilly Center?" And on a side note how long is that Howdy-doodie looking Ralph Wilson gonna continue to complain about lack of funds in WNY while the team plays at "Ralph Wilson Stadium?" I know it won't make a huge difference in the over-all cash crisis, but $5 is $5 and so is a few million for naming rights.
