Prett good memory, all those board checks didn't knock it all out of you ! The place was called the Dip 'N Donut, and it is now a Subway restaurant.
Back in your era, did you guys frequent any Olean bars, or stay mainly at the Rathskellar and in Allegany ?
Places like (working my way up State St. toward Olean): Der Hut (now the Chinese Buffet); Paul's Steak House (did you ever ride the huge cow on the roof); Sullivan's (now Younger's); The Wheel; The Sagebrush; The Cabin; The Wooden Nickel; Tito's; Fudge's; just to name a few.
I seem to remember Paul Harvey saying once that Olean had more bars per square mile than anywhere else in the USA, or something like that.

Der Hut---Yes Sullivan's---Yes The Wheel--never heard of that one The Cabin--never heard of that one Tito's Tap Room---Yes Fudges---No Jimmy Dales----went in there once---folks turned around look at us----everyone stopped talking---all you could hear was the scratchy needle on the 45---we backed out---went away and never went back Some of the guys used to hit the Silver Slipper---I think Jim Mahoney or someone from my class has the bowling machine from there. Nite Lite was always good for laffs Mostly Skellar and Club17/Burton/Haver's Tavern

my buddies and i hatched a plan to hit every bar in olean when i turned 18. we went through the phone book and found 76 spots that served alcohol. not bad for a town in which 17,500 folks resided. as i recall we took a reality pill and identified 10 that we would sample..i do recall walking into AJs, the Wheel, Jimmy Dale's [forgot to style my spurs]. there was an alternative lifestyle bar east of bradner stadium that we went into for kicks. we then hit sullivans and the pizza hut and ended up at der hutski for the infamous OV split night. on wednesday nights that place was always packed.

I'm glad it was not one of us that took this thread off topic or the complaints would have been raining in but since we are here...
back in 03 a bunch of us did a pub crawl around town. We started at the Knights of Columbus and hit every bar on our walk up to the Old Library then every bar on our walk all the way to Randy's. A few of us, myself included actually drank in 24 bars that night. Some highlights were Tito's taproom, Cheers, Moose Lodge, fillin station, Bowlean, Don's, Trappers and of course all of the normal ones like OP, Burton, Skeller, and Randy's. There were a few places that were not very excited to see 15 Bona students all come into their bar half in the bag, but surprisingly Dreamers was the least friendly to us usually and I came back the next year and it's a freashman bar called Fosters! Two we missed because they were closed were Grannies Verona and the Bird Cage so there is at least 26 possible bars right along those roads still.

And by the end of them the gotta be careful around the women. The pimples turn to freckles and they lose 100 lbs. And mysteriously HK really becomes HK.

Some of my friends (including southhampton) did a bar crawl in the olean/allegany area this year. They went to 18 bars. Has anyone topped that?

We do a pub crawl every weekend it seems...
well shortened usually Grannie's>Tito's>3rd Base>AJ's>Youngers
with some alternate's inbetween, maybe a Sean Patrick's, Village Green, Don's, or even Press Box thrown in the mix.
Atleast Olean still has a plentiful supply of bars, I wouldn't know what to do with my time?

Ah, Mr. Smiff, you played bar golf; as I recall par was 2. I think of doing that now and my stomach turns over.

I can respect and respond to any Gansey thread that evolves into a drinking convo, especially when it pertains largely to vintage Olean bars.
That's one thing that's good, if not great, about Olean: its lineup of bars. Not always the best - Cheers, Silver Slipper, The Plant - nor the most popular (AOH, Tito's, Parkwood), but the variety can't be denied. It's sad what's become of Don's in recent years; my friends and I have had some of our finest hours between "The Friendly" and Tito's, and that was before we were anywhere close to 21. Though it's always good for a cold one, a ballgame and usually a game of poker and never was glamourous, that place is nowhere near time it was just a few years back.
It's good to see people keep Tito's going. That place always looks so desolate. Its jukebox is excellent, and Tito's always welcomes my crowd back, no matter how long between visits and regardless of how many rocks glasses we shatter playing speed quarters.
