RESIDENTS TOAST DEMOLITION OF DELAPIDATED MAIN STREET HOMES
by Kate Day Sager, The Times Herald
Allegany - Allegany residents toasted each other with champagne Tuesday in front of two Main St. homes that had become the blight of the neighborhood.
The houses, located at 18 and 22 Main St., had been occupied by 16 St. Bonaventure students until school let out this spring.
When neighbors learned that the landlord of the homes, Terry Benca, had sold the houses to the Kinley Corp. and will be replaced with new victorian-style townhouses, they were elated.
Sue and Joe Finn, who have lived next door to the homes for 25 years, decided to throw the champagne party as a way to thank Kinley Corp.
"They (Kinley Corp.) are taking a positive step to make this community wonderful," said Mrs. Finn. "We think it is not only going to help Main St. but the whole community."
Mrs. Finn said the houses has been occupied by students for a number of years and continued to go downhill. She said this past year was one of the worst because the houses were basically trashed by the occupants. The houses sustained so much damage they were condemned by village officials at the end of the school year.

It is about time that something was done about this. The way that these landlords take advantage of these kids is ridiculous. How much were they charging to live in this slum? If this person that owns these homes lives in Allegany or Olean these "neighbors" should march on that house and put the blame where it really belongs.

Is there any truth to the rumor that these townhouses will be converted for Senior Citizen living?

I share shaltz' sentiments...I will pour one out on the curb for my homies who used to live there. Good times, great memories there.

I agree. These houses were dumps but those guys could party. I was there in early May at a gathering outside the two houses. It was only about 6 or 7pm when an irate (and extremely trashy) neighbor came over yelling to turn the f*ing music down. He then said he was going to shoot someone if they didn't turn it down. It's a shame that people like that will no longer be bothered by the White House and Blue Porches.

I thought it was the B-ball team who were the thugs. If what that neighbor said was true, someone should turn him in. This board was freaking out of a little breach of the peace arrest. Those comments include threatening, harrassment, creating a public disturbance, and breach of the peace. WHAT A THUG!

The neighbors lived there 25 years! Why the hell didn't they move? Maybe they enjoyed yelling at college kids. But seriously, yelling at college kids at 6-7 p.m. is ridiculous. When did this world become so PG-rated and suck asshat?

This is the a slap to the face.
Everyone claims the landlord is to blame. . .so why have the houses been leveled? 16 bright college minds have been robbed of a home. and no doubt. . .here come the critics. . .
Allegany residents . . .You have killed a tradition. I'm sure you will come back with many stories. But in the end. . .you killed a tradition.
to note. . .you always wonder about the support for the basketball team. . .the school moral. . .the lack of student support.
We've been there win loose or draw. We bleed brown and white. Hope to see you this year. But if you need to write a rain check i'll understand You were never there to begin with.
Love,
the BEVEL!
