Left my home in Connecticut around 9PM last night, and my son (he's now 15) and I arrived in Olean at 3:30.....he's now at the Solomon Basketball camp. Briefly said hello to Coach Solomon and Coach Luhn.....have seen some of the players already, the new guys have left until school begins.
It's nice to be back here, the campus is under a flurry of repair work. Was handling a business call from the Richter Center, what a beautiful facility.
Hey Fox, I'm staying at the Country Inn and Suites. The place is wireless, I can work from the room, the dining area or outside.

Watched the Bonnies play full-court in the R.C. last week (about 45 min.) and came away feeling pretty positive about 2006-7... my humble observations are as follows: --Kaba is a distinct improvement over Kuba; not going to be All A-10, but appears to be tenacious on the boards, decent hands, not alot of "O", though. --Calvin will be an even bigger plus at the point. The kid is really smooth, confident, and has a decent jumper, but his forte looks to be as a slasher. --Feretti is going to surprise alot of fans... has a very nice looking jumper, plays hard-nosed "D", can run the floor and really get up. --Morris has a build and demeanor of a veteran player and will contribute immediately (pound the boards, "D", and run). --James Williams did not participate, but various reliable sources predict he will be the very best of the newcomers. --"Peaches" Relph seems to be much sharper, and looked to me to be closer to true form than last year (and I don't say that lightly). --Paul Williams, quite simply, will be a force to be reckoned with this year... not an All-American, but, as at the end of last year, will make opponents play interior "D" against us. --Mike Lee has continued to develop and has added a bit more upper body bulk (Kaba DID "stuff" him TWICE, though). --Hawkins, at least on that day, shot the jumper well mid-range, and made a "3", his "D" looked tough... this kid has to play, in my opinion. --Diggs plays good "D", but. from here, will be buried pretty deeply on the pines (Calvin & The Peach at PG). --Fox would struggle to get time at OHS and Ivan took a shot to the nose early and departed the R.C.
I've been accused of being overly opptimistic at times, particularly in Batavia, NY, but, what the h*ll, I do love those Bonnies and I firmly believe, we're on our way back to respectability!! E.B. ('69)

EddieBall - great update. You got my optimism up just reading your assessments. Are you from Batavia? Do you know if Bill Neth ('77) is still around that area. His family owned a men's clothing store.

What am I missing here whats the big deal about a 3 day basketball camp? Basketball camps usually range from 1-5 days... any college camp is at least 3 days usually which allows the kids to stay over in the dorms etc...

Is there a point to this?? No, there isn't... But just to keep this useless argument going... Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. SBU83, I count 4 separate days. However, the camp spans 72 hours. There happens to be 72 hours in 3 days. The average human sleeps 7.75 hours a night (or day, depending on your sleep schedual). According to recent survey data obtained by the Council, Americans purchase 350 million pounds of hot dogs at retail stores - that's 9 billion hot dogs! In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Bill Brasky once ate a bible while water skiing.

With this heat and humidity, whatever the number of days, it's enough. The key thing, is the kids are enjoying it. The Coaches run a good camp, they are really into it. My son attended the Calhoun camp at UConn last year....he's enjoying this more. Maybe someday we can get 4 players selected on the 1st round . I'll take one. The players participating this week are the returnees from last year. They are working hard, very hard. My opinion: Relph: is showing quickness, shooting very well, I expect a terrific year from him. Lee: Has added muscle. Working on his inside game. Will make all A10. Williams: He's thinner, stronger, running the court very well. Shooting free throws with arc. Clearly these 3 guys are key to a successful year. Hawkins: What a leaper, has been making the short range jumper. He will have a good year. Benson, Foote, Evan, Diggs & Fox are also working the camp. Diggs looks like he can run the team, but I expect what Eddieball said to be true. I like Foote, he works hard, he trys, and he is learning.....maybe another Peter van Paasen? ? The attitude is terrific. These kids work hard, they seem to be good kids......the campers sure like them, and the players take care of the campers. All good to see, and to hear. Hard to make any predictions when you haven't seen the competition. These guys will make it tough on every opponent, and they will win there share of games.

Baron used to have 4 times the number of kids Slo had - Andy Moore outdraws Slo at his camp every year.

I'm surprised more kids don't go. Baron, however, had buddies coaching in the City who would bring in kids by the vanload. Also, JB had 12-15 teams in for team camp; Solomon had 37 two weeks ago.
