I was listening to Mike & Chris today and they had a fantastic interview with Ernie Acorsi (Giants GM.....hope I spelled the name correctly). He was relating some football memories when he was about 14, when he saw Johnny Unitas for the first time. Johnny was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and then traded to the Baltimore Colts. Ernie said the first time he ever saw Johnny, just watching him he knew that he was special. But he talked about a game (pre-season) between the Colts and Steelers, mentioned St. Bonaventure and the Rooneys. I know that Rev Silas Rooney's family owned the Steelers, and they used St Bonaventure for pre-season practice. There is a wonderful site that you should spend some time viewing web.sbu.edu/friedsam/archives/football/the_history.htm

Thanks for the link, Frank.
I didn't even know that information was around anywhere.
As you know, I'm from the 'Burgh originally and am still an AVID Steeler fan.
I always tell people about how the Steelers used to have their pre-season practice at Bonas.
Until they found out that I was coming there and then they moved.
Jim

Jim62, good to see you are back to posting. I noticed you weren't active in a while and wondered what happened to you. Glad to see you are back and I'll assume your absence was merely due to the off-season and lack of topics to comment on.

Unitas played at Louisville and played against Bonas in 1951 at Forness Stadium. Check the 1952 yearbook for a writeup of the game.

Bona and Steelers great Jack Butler is the director of BLESTO which is a scouting service for the NFL. It is run out of Pittsburgh. His son is Director of college scouting for the Colts.
Maplehurst, Is there anyway of getting a copy of the Bona games you mentioned a couple of weeks ago?

Hugh Devore a former head coach of the Bonnies recommended the Green Bay Packers to hire Vince Lombardi. Hugh Devore has the best winning percentage in school history with 25 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie for a .735 winning percentage. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Devore

Devore and Frank Leahy were supposedly good friends. Devore was the Head coach at Notre Dame in 1963. Parseghian took over the next year.

Hugh Devore has the best winning percentage in school history with 25 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie for a .735 winning percentage. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_DevoreHugh Devore and my Dad attended ND together although Devore was a year or so ahead of him. Dad was active in the ND Club of WMass and it was not unusual to see folk like Angelo Bertelli, Fr. Hesburgh, Moose Krause and Devore at such functions My Dad's freshmen year was very somber as Knute Rockne had died in an airplane crash in the Spring. The campus was in mourning. Pops was a Rudy type, translating for French & German professors to work his way through school and playing on the "Hamburger Squad" against which the varsity ran their plays. Unlike Rudy he did not get in a varsity game. Pops was influential with getting ND involved with several recruits from WMass area, one of which became a Heisman Trophy winner, Angelo Bertelli. Dad also laid groundwork for Joe Scibelli and Nick Buoniconti, (although Scibelli only stayed a season or so before heading elsewhere) Scibelli had a long career with the LA Rams and Buoniconti with the Dolphins. I still have a letter from an ND New England alumni director telling my Dad that legendary coach Frank Leahy said to tell Bertelli he would need to raise his English and Math grades before ND would condsider him. Dad passed the message along and Bertelli went on to become an ND legend, nicknamed the Springfield Rifle (actually from West Springfield) for his propensity to fire the ball deep, the nickname came because of the Springfield Armory which produced "The Gun that Won the West" and many rifles and machine guns throughout history dating back to the Revolutionary War. It just seemed a natural association.

The Bonas game that I have movies of is the Youngstown game in 1946 (I think). The film is 16mm and the first half is in color. I haven't been able to see the film since my 16 mm projector died about 10 years ago. Maybe there is a firm that can take the film and copy it to a DVD. The game is reasonably clear but shows all of the players on the field, no close ups. Don't expect to see ESPN. The film is in Long Island and I will be going to Long Island on Sep 20th. I'll make a reminder to try to go to the attic and fetch it. It should be cool enough in the attic by then. The film also has views of old Bonas. For instance it shows the rooms of Devereax Hall in the late 1930's. It also shows tennis courts by the RR bridge. Most of the non-football part of the film seems to be a recruiting tool to get students to come to Bonas, except some scenes are with quite a bit of snow ( the real kind, not the snow that used to be in old films). The big question is who has a 16 mm projector?
