When I was the editor of the bv i got fed up seeing cig butts all over campus so one day I did a little experiment and wrote a column about it: i counted all the cigarette butts along the sidewalk from plassman to the rc. There were over 500. Then I opened up the cigarette disposal bin outside the rc, put on some gloves, dug in and counted... 13.
It’s a vile habit that effects everyone between insurance premiums and the gross mess smokers leave everywhere they go and is fortunately phasing itself out. Good riddance and good decision by the university.

Smoking has gradually been whittled down over the years but it just needs to go away. Period. The University has made a good decision. BTW...a $25 littering fine for flipping cigarette butts anyplace on campus but in a proper receptacle would end the butts mess.

I try really hard to not trash other posters on here but firstdev has proved time and again that he is a bigger clown than most of you think Jay3hof is. The difference is firstdev isn't just being reactionary and isn't willing to listen to the other side of the conversation. So I have extended firstdev an invitation to my personal block party and he has accepted and repeatedly proved why he belongs there.
As for the smoking issue. I'm for the ban. During freshman year my roommate picked up the habit and only smoked out behind ShayLo but everything in our room smelled like cigs. I liked the guy but I spent as little time in the room as possible and even moved my dresser into another room so my clothes wouldnt smell. My roommate followed all the rules in place at the time but still it significantly impacted me as a non-smoker.
I would agree with whoever said this is to preempt pot smoking on campus pending a change in that law, however during my time weed was more commonly smoked in dorms and apartments than tobacco was so I don't know if this change will be particularly effective in curbing that behavior.

Typical millennial - attempting to impose an Orwellian personal opinion on everyone, regardless if the habit is pretty non offensive i.e.: smoking outdoors. Micromanaging personal behavior is never appropriate, especially in a free society historically based on libertaire. Take a stand on something that's really important and central to our Catholic faith, like abortion or religious freedom. Skip the cig butts gig.

Too bad you failed rhetoric at Bonas, but keep trying eventually you will succeed. I have faith in you brother.

Am I the only one that finds it funny that the same person that flamed the school for having an ecumenically neutral main meeting room in the new Umin building is saying we should focus on religious freedom?
Also fighting for individual liberties while being (I assume based on the context) anti-abortion is too rich for my blood. But yeah I'm just a loser millennial that needs to force my beliefs onto everyone else.

Your confused as usual - Bonas is a Catholic, Franciscan university, not a member of the SUNY anti religious system. There is no such thing as a ecumenically neutral site on this campus. The Chapel in campus ministry you refer to has a Franciscan cross prominently displayed at the entrance. Get your facts and your religion straight. Sorry Pal - the Fort Duquesne gang's bright idea of having a mosque on campus was rejected after numerous alums protested that cracked idea. Just for your information there is a mosque conveniently located in Olean. All are welcome on this Catholic, Franciscan campus.

Again apparently you missed out on your Catholic theology course. The Roman Catholic Church is unfailingly Pro Life and honors the Sanctity of Life. See the March for Life in Washington, D.C. held yearly on anniversary of the horrendous Roe v Wade decision, with numerous Franciscan priests and nuns making the pilgrimage.

First Dev - enough of your Foxnews and Catholic Church BS - what the Catholic church has allowed over the last 40 years - allowing their ranks to rape boys - you no longer have any moral high ground...you go away and put your head in the sand and beg for forgiveness - you dont dare run around telling anyone how to live their life !!! Can you name a worse crime than that was allowed and covered up by your beloved church? I dont think it gets any worse than raping a child over and over and over - but be sure not to eat meat on Friday because you will go to heaven. Absolute BS !

Per OTH. Only a few more months for students, profs and staff to get their tokes in. I think its far more looking ahead at the possibility of NY State allowing marijuana and a college like St Bona does not want kids walking around smoking a joint while a prospective student walks the campus with his parents. Banning any smoking - tobacco or marijuana - bypasses this.

No one is defending the actions of priests or ministers or iman's or rabbi's who commit criminal acts with their flocks, no one. This is an issue not isolated to the Catholic Church, so lets not single out our faith. Punish those convicted in a court of law, not by a star chamber trial in the anti Catholic media. That being said - the tenets of the Catholic faith remain intact and extremely relevant today......the Sanctity of Life, care for the poor, care for the sick, care for the homeless, and our faith in our Lord. The Catholic Church has accomplished enormous good in our world - running hospital, nursing home, and assisted care facilities across our world, feeding the poor in the most disadvantaged countries on earth, sheltering the homeless and refugees all over the globe. Its an exemplary record that we should be very proud of. Stop listening to CNN and MSNBC (which never acknowledge the overwhelming good works of the our church, and seek to repress our faith in every way) and voices of the far left who are seeking to destroy our faith, and get your fanny in mass once in while, if you are not already (you probably are). Sorry for being rhetorical. And by the way I do not watch any network TV. I gather my news from the BN and OTH. Have a good day my brother.
