Over the Memorial Day weekend I began thinking again of the ever present discussion surrounding the St. Bonaventure school mascot and nickname. Perhaps we should be considering this topic from several new points of view and so I offer the following suggestions for your pleasure and amusement.
St. Bonaventure River Onions (I think I remember that there is a river behind them playing fields back there somewhere) Of course I have no idea what a river onion is but it sounds cool, man. St. Bonaventure Sandal Straps (very esoteric) St. Bonaventure Enchanted Mountains (women's teams only - aaaaahhhhh, mountains) St. Bonaventure Friars Minor (when we are in the bottom half of the A-10 and Friars Major when we are in the top half) St. Bonaventure Crustaceans (sp- too lazy to check if my spelling is correct) (if LeMoyne College in Syracuse can have the useless nickname of the Dolphins, perhaps ours can be equally useless) St. Bonaventure Hot Wings St. Bonventure Road Kill - sure is plenty of "varment" in the hills there. St. Bonaventure whiteblackyellowredfreckled peoples or: St. Bonaventure "select a politically correct hue Indians."
We could go corporate: St. Bonaventure Seneca Nation Casino Blackjack Dealers
And of course, last but not least.
St. Bonaventure Welders.
Other thoughts?

It really doesn't matter what the nickname of St. Bonaventure University is. Its fans will always follow and cheer its teams no matter the nickname (even if the nickname sounds dumb or is not intimidating). If it is the Bonnies, Brown Indians, or anything else, we can all agree that we cheer for the athletes and the universuty. Not the nickname.

Speak for yourself!
So many people are enamored with "Bonnies;" it is certainly part of the attraction! I would indeed be less of a fan if we were known by some other (ridiculous) nickname!

Giant - you must have been the kid at Bonnies who was constantly getting humiliated by First Rob and brutalized for having a complete lack of personality and or any idea of humor. I suppose you could have occasionally come out of your room in Fancis and gotten over your agoraphobia. It is summertime, lighten up pal.

There is nothing funny about making a ass out of yourself. Based on some of the replies on the subject, maybe the nickname that fits best, is the "MORONS".

OK - apparently you need to have things spelled out to you. It was a joke, light humor on a hot summer day. Levity, a chuckle, something to make people maybe smile, evidently not you. I hope you find some happiness in your life. You may not like my sense of humor but for heaven's sake, lighten up!

In my eyes it is no joke to make fun of the school. Just a sign of immaturity. You have given others the oppurtunity to take cheap shots at the place. I suppose you find it funny when someone says a good nickname would be the "CHEATERS". Some how I don't find this funny but insulting.

Earlier today I read a column by Joe Saraceno of the USA Today about nicknames and mascots in sports. I read the version online.
You will find Saraceno's comments interesting on the nickname issue. Joe would like there to be a law banning any team from having a Native American nickname like the Warriors, Redskins, Chiefs, etc. He didn't mention the Brown Indians but I am sure this would fit into his category as well.
Check it out.
