The National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association sounds like the logical -- even the safe -- place for a small Christian school to compete, a great way to avoid being fed to the lions.
But last summer, Crichton College announced it would be leaving the NCCAA and joining the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).
Next season, the men's basketball team, which Walker will coach, will play its home games at the Mid-South Coliseum. It's a large venue for a program that has been drawing a couple of hundred people per game.
But Walker is nothing if not optimistic. His transfers include flashy 6-3 guard Jonathan Loe, who has been a scaled-down globetrotter by going from Bartlett High to Ole Miss to Northwest Mississippi Community College to Middle Tennessee State to Crichton.
Walker is also getting a 6-5 guard from St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10 Conference -- Brian Gibbs, who averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. And Jerry Dover Jr. is coming from Southwest.
"We're going back to the coliseum and of course his dad played there (for pro teams). We feel like we can compete for an NAIA national championship on a yearly basis," says Walker, whose previous coaching stops include being head coach at Raleigh-Egypt, coach and general manager for the Memphis Fire of the USBL and an assistant's position at Middle Tennessee.
