In reading FOLARIN's bio, MICHAEL holds the record time for his high school's 100 meter hurdles! Was wrong about last year at JUCO, FOLARIN missed his second year at Nevada with an injury. Maybe he will run Bona Track after basketball season. I am pretty sure he would set the school record almost immediately.

LOL with that......the best all around athlete ever to play for Bonas - George Carter '67 holds most SBU track records. He was All WNY in baseball, football, basketball and track and field. He was drafted after graduating from SBU by the NFL, NBA, MLB, AFL, and ABA. Played with the Pistons and Squires in between US Army service. We will never see another athlete of his stature again.

Think Folarin, Kaba, Thompson and Jones will be under the watchful eye of one of the best fitness and conditioning experts in the country. He has June,July,August,September, and October to reshape their bodies and will be rebuilt just like our former center waa

The team is at 13 players I believe and that includes 2 walk-ons. So, 11 scholarship and 2 walk-ons. Then, if a few players are injured it would hurt them in live 5 on 5 practices. They need bodies.

Develop is a 4 letter word in these NIL times. Venning developed, and left. Diamonds in the rough will now disappear once they become semi polished. I figure he is recruited because he is 6-10, is alive, and we have a budget spot for him.

Try to put yourself in Venning's shoes. He left a college after 2 years at Morgan State. Maybe he was miserable there...he is allowed to transfer. He came here and developed and got his body right and had success. He is earning a degree from Bonas!!! He graduated. Why does he have to use his extra year at bonas for a master's we may not even have. Is he an NBA player? Probably not so why not take advantage of earning more NIL money elsewhere. I wish he was still on our roster but I completely understand his decision.

YES, I understand the NIL has ruined small schools. What 4 letter word is develop??? Not sure what that means. However, you still have to bring in players to fill a team. Who knows, maybe he develops and then they budget some NIL money but the younger guys they have been bringing in do not receive NIL money until they prove themselves.

IMO the new concept of development in college hoops is finding the rare kid who can develop a relationship with a coach, other players, or another student (girlfriend?), or just a place/campus in general such that they decide that maybe the grass is not greener someplace else and decide to stay put. Maybe not everyone will choose to take the money if offered. I know that recently we don’t seem to have found those guys, which is frustrating, but who knows, maybe we can find them going forward. Can you really blame Schmidt for trying? Wouldn’t it be great for Bonas to develop the reputation as the place to go to and to stay? I have previously suggested that I think it is likely that some of the guys who have moved on will report back that moving someplace new is NOT the easy path to success and happiness they expected and that moving and starting over is a pain in the butt and that they wish they had stayed put. These things gain and then lose popularity and the pendulum makes big swings. Right now this is all new and most of the talking is about and/or being done by those who have benefited from it. I think that will change in the next few years. Maybe.

I think that will change in the next few years. Maybe. lofton, osun, welch really didn't benefit from moving on. Assa and barry should have probably stayed b/c they were almost guaranteed 30+ minutes per game. Melian Martinez left and still has not landed on a team. Assa and barry could do really well but they downgraded conferences and what happens if they don't fit right in with the staff or struggle learning a new system? Transferring could really hurt them. However, NCAA is no longer worried about the student/athlete getting an education and developing. These guys can now transfer every year makes me wonder how good of an education are they getting and in some cases it hurts them more than helps them. Oh well.

Coach, I respect your opinions but is it for us to say what players benefitted (or not) from transferring to other schools?
Agreed that the Iron 4 did not become stars at the P6 schools — Welch was injured and was not going to see much time at AL — but they most likely got paid well. None of us knows their financial situations.
If getting paid was their main goal then they benefitted. I watched many of Iowa State and Florida games. Lofton definitely lost a step and looked beat up … even during our NIT run. Florida was not a good SEC team.
Holmes was a key piece for an ISU team that overachieved and made the dance with 10 new players. OO lost his starting job and his value decreased.
I’m sure Barry felt he should have gotten 30 minutes a game last season based on defense, energy and attitude — especially with the lack of senior leadership. Barry seems like a leader to me.
Assa’s improvement was thwarted because last year’s grad transfers and Chad took more shots and often dominated the ball. Assa was option 4 or 5 or 6 on the offensive end. That is on the coaches — not Assa.
These two players probably assumed more upperclass transfers again were coming in so why risk another poor chemistry, frustrating season. This is all conjecture on my part but Schmidt never seemed fully committed to or confident in his sophomores. And, he seldom/never played both sophomores together. Why?
It’s too bad because I really had high hopes for those two guys who seemed to be talented and upstanding Bona men. Seems like both players just wanted a fresh start and to be appreciated.
