The reason the loss to Northern Iowa was so bad was because nobody has ever heard of them. Forget quad ratings and Kenpom. The only thing people know about Northern Iowa is that is the place where Buddy Holly died. Oh yes, there was a baseball game in a corn patch. Rest assured, it was a very bad loss and will be so on Selection Sunday. The new ratings prove it. Here was my knowledge of Northern Iowa prior to Saturday's game. Northern Iowa suffered the greatest collapse in NCAA tournament history back in 2016. They led Texas A&M 69-57 with 35 seconds left and lost. They blew a 12 point lead with 35 seconds left on the clock. In fact, KenPom gave Texas A&M a 0.00% chance of winning. Now that's a bad loss. And Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner went to Northern Iowa. You either have a selective memory or are a Google cherry-picker! Surely you heard that UNI beat #1 Kansas in the ncaa tourney 10 years ago. If not… you’re welcome.

As for UNI beating #1 Kansas 10 years ago, I do remember that but when you get a chance please let me know what that game has to do with us being down 19 points in the second half on Saturday and ultimately losing. I'll hang up and listen.

I'll hang up and listen. It has to do with why we scheduled UNI. They have a history of being a strong program and the college basketball world knows the name well. We knew going in that they had the best player in their conference and the team was going to be a contender for the conference title. mvc-sports.com/news/2021/10/19/arch-madness-drake-tabbed-as-mvc-mens-basketball-preseason-favorite.aspxAll of this information has to do with why they were scheduled. Seriously, UNI is the reason we didn't move much in the Polls. We were on a lot of the AP ballots. Just missed the rankings, coming in at 27th. And the coaches still have us ranked (coming in at 25th): www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/rankings/coaches/If UNI wasn't a respected program we wouldn't still be getting the votes we are getting.

But UNI made a name for themselves earlier in the season before they got there. They knocked off #1 North Carolina early in the season that got them a ton of press. UNC went on to win the ACC regular season and tournament and advanced to the NCAA Championship game. They had a lot of nice wins that season. They were a hot and cold team. They are a well respected program.

They are a well respected program. I never said that UNI was not a respected program. They obviously are. I actually loved the scheduling and hope we can return the favor at their place next year. And I will be rooting for them to win the MVC this year. But it was a bad loss because of the way it would be perceived by voters and basketball fans and that has proven to be true. Kansas lost to Dayton and only dropped from 4 to 8. Alabama lost to Iona and only dropped from 10 to 16. Memphis lost to an Iowa St team that went 2-22 last year and dropped from 9 to 18. Granted all on neutral courts but losing at home in OOC games is a killer to me. We all know these AP rankings are meaningless in the grand scheme of things other than it's great pub for the school and it's fun to talk about and debate. That's all.

Does that mean Florida isn't respected? Ohio State dropped out of the polls when they lost to Xavier. Does that mean Xavier isn't respected? Oregon dropped out of the polls when they lost to BYU. Does that mean BYU isn't respected? Xavier dropped out of the polls when they lost to Iowa State. Does that mean Iowa State isn't respected? It's become increasingly clear that wolfman2020 is only here to troll.

The Kansas ranking doesn't have anything to do with Dayton. It has everything to do with Kansas. Kansas could have lost to UNI at home and they would still be in the top-10. Kansas is ranked where they are because they are Kansas and they still get the benefit of the doubt. The same is true of Alabama. Dayton and Iona are [insert generic loss] impacts to rankings for teams expected to be competing for a run at the National title.

Kansas should have maybe dropped 2 or 3 more down, but a last minute buzzer beater against Dayton or a 10 point loss to a team that is way way back in the NET ranking.
They lost it happened move on and fix this situation. As I stated on the other thread its the bench. Its easy to blame the players, but when there is only 6 or 8 minutes (don't remember) bench time that is on the coaching staff. That isn't saying they haven't done a good job, but in order to get to the next step you need to recruit a bench then can actually play quality minutes. It is also an issue when the coach doesn't trust his bench. I might be wrong but I think someone said 2 - 3 losses in the OOC and 4 - 5 losses in the league would be solid. Not in this a10. That many losses would be a horrific.
Only time will tell what will happen in the future.

That's why it was a bad loss.

That's why it was a bad loss. Okay. If that's what you meant then I simply disagree with the term "bad loss". I consider a bad loss to be a team that should never be able to compete with a team. I am thinking of games like when Charleston Southern beat Missouri. The really long shot wins.

What’s interesting is there was very little statistical difference before both games between losing to Dayton and losing to UNI One was a neutral court loss (buzzer beater) and one was a home loss (10 points). Can't afford to lose a game like this when the a10 is down.

Let’s concentrate on beating the next opponent. We can control that by playing better defense. Polls are a barometer that change week to week. Obsessing over rankings this early in the season is wasted energy. The polls will take care of themselves.
