The Big Cat was remembered fondly by the announcer crew last night during the Knicks-Heat game. They spoke of his ambassador duties and how he grew the game in underprivileged nations.
Even better, they spoke of his values as a man and as a player. It was great to hear him remembered for the positive influence he had on so many. Talk about a true Bonaventure man...

BIG BOB - never forget the day Bob, Paul Hoffman and Billy Kalbaugh were in the Pickenneny Restaurant in Homer Hill. They all sat at the bar drinking a beer and eating cheese burgers. Al Plano made the best.

My memory of Bob is the time, at the behest of Paul Grys, needed a ride to Buffalo at a holiday. So in my family's 1961 two door Chevy Belair we merrily made our way up 219. (prior to NIL) Never bumped into Bob again until 10 years ago when having breakfast in Scottsdale, I said to my wife, "there's Bob Lanier " She said "where's the picture?" So in real life we sat and conversed with the big guy. RIP Bob, Tom Stith and George Carter .

Last time I saw Bob was at the Final Four Team anniversary banquet. We all adjourned to the Burton for some drinks and most of the team were there at the bar. Had a great chat with Matt,Dale and Hoffy and Bob......it was a fantastic evening........

reading tributes to Bill Walton, I had forgotten about this mention of the Big Cat in the classic movie Airplane
Joey: Wait a minute. I know you. You're Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers. Roger Murdock: I'm sorry, son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I'm the co-pilot. Joey: You are Kareem! I've seen you play. My dad's got season tickets. Roger Murdock: I think you should go back to your seat now, Joey. Right, Clarence? Captain Oveur: Nahhhhhh, he's not bothering anyone. Let him stay here. Roger Murdock: But just remember, my name is... [showing his nametag] Roger Murdock: ROGER MURDOCK. I'm an airline pilot. Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. [Kareem gets angry] Joey: And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs. Roger Murdock: [breaking character] The hell I don't! LISTEN, KID! I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night! Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes!

Ironically, MGM+ was showing Airplane last night with Kareem's Lanier / Walton comment.
