Just to clarify on my post above—-I noted that John and I roomed on Second Rob. We were not roommates. We lived in different rooms on the same floor. I can see how that original statement could be misinterpreted by those who know John and I were not roomies.

Thursday update from daughter: ** Just wanted to give a quick update on my Dad for all of his friends and family…he seemed to be in better spirits today, fed himself a little breakfast, sat up for bits and was speaking a little clearer and louder. He still has complete paralysis on the right side, but does have feeling, and he started feeling some leg pain today (which I guess is normal). They are ready to discharge him to an aggressive rehab facility as soon as insurance clears it. All positive progress in the right direction! We have told him about all the overwhelming support and love… Please keep the prayers coming…it is so heartwarming to see how loved he is!

Everyone talks about what if Lanier didn’t injure his knee. Well what if John Hayes didn’t injure his knee. — Leading the nation in scoring as a freshman and this was accomplished with having Lew Alcindor in the same class. — Bonnies record for all 3 of his varsity seasons would have been significantly better with John having a healthy knee. — For the 1967-68 season the Bonnies finished with a 26-2 record and final #3 in the AP poll. Bonnies received a tough draw and lost to North Carolina in the regional semi-finals. It was N. Carolina losing to UCLA in the Championship game. Bona vs. UCLA very well could have happened in 1968 if John Hayes didn’t injure his knee. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/1968.htmlwww.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2020-05-13/1968-ncaa-tournament-bracket-scores-stats-records

Carolina loss). But what about his two other seasons? If his soph season had not been wiped out, SBU would have most likely been a strong NIT team with Carter and Butler, which really counted for something then. Then his senior season, the little known story: he got hurt again and Hayes has always told me that he was upset he was not red-shirted that year with injury. Then he would have returned for another year--making our NCAA team even stronger.

Delighted to hear the progress John has made during his early recovery from a stroke. This is very encouraging for a successful return to a good quality of life outcome. Continued prayers will make this a reality. His daughter's reports on John's progress is greatly appreciated.

Gregmitch70– the information you provided that John shared with you about the red shirt season that never happened is troubling indeed. Even more so when you consider that the NCAA team if 1970 could have used all the additional scoring talent John could’ve provided after Lanier went down. I have no idea whose decision it would’ve been to pursue the red shirt season but it was a shame that it wasn’t pursued. Could possibly rewritten our history with that one move. That UCLA team that beat Jacksonville for that years championship was not one of the classic powerhouse Wooden teams.

That was between year, between Alcindor and Walton....the center was Patterson, certainly not close to the others.

Perhaps, but four players on that UCLA team went on to successful NBA careers. Bona would have had a decent chance in that game, my best guess is somewhere between 25% and 35%. But, UCLA would have been a solid favorite, Steve Patterson, or not.

If I am not mistaken John Hayes had two knee injuries while enrolled at Bonas.
The first serious injury occurred after his freshman year, the second before his senior year (in a pickup game at the Olean Y). As a frosh in '68-69 I saw John make a comeback after the second surgery in the NCAA sanctioned year.
His mobility was definitely impacted. There was no need to play John that year. We were prohibited by an insane NCAA edict from playing in the post season (by the way the season sanction was for crime of taking a player - Tom Riker and his family to dinner at a family diner no less. While UNC and Syracuse were hiring hookers to "entertain" recruits, but were never sanctioned)
A healthy John Hayes would have formed a dynamic duo with both John and Big Bob.........that team would have given UCLA a run for their money........

Update from daughter:
My Dad’s first day of physical therapy went well, he is able to bear weight on his leg and they even had him shuffling across the floor using a walker! They can feel the muscles responding in his right arm, so I believe he will start being able to move it sooner than later. He can feed himself with his left arm and his swallowing is getting a little better every day, as is his speech. Keep the prayers coming and the encouraging words, they are definitely working!❤️🙏🏻 Thanks to all for your prayers!!
