The only thing I see consistently over the last 2 years is an offense that is stagnant and a porous defense. If we have added 2 talented players and couple that with our experienced starters from last we should be a better team.

Many good points on issues with our play.
No one factor but one that I feel is a significant one is our lack of assists over the course of the season. As seen in the above posted A10 Conference rankings our lowest ranking of all areas is #12.

Wgt, well said. You don’t have assists when you throw the ball into the post on maybe half the possessions (?) or more, to a player who is not a skilled passer.
Bona guards do not turn over the ball very often … but the starting center averages 2.5 TOs per game; the backup center one per game. That is one-third of our 10.5 turnovers a game. OUCH!

Sometimes adding 5th year seniors might not always help. MAW has been in the doghouse and it's probably deserved. The bandwagon doesn't know what really goes on behind the scenes but I'm willing to bet MAW is an issue at times. This team does not gel. The guards are not quick compared to other guards. The team has good shooters but they are either all on or all off. I have never seen shooters shoot either 60 percent from 3 or 15 percent from 3-It's really odd. I don't understand this team and it's really frustrating b/c you have no clue what team will show up. However, many of the losses were not b/c of coaching and more due to poor shooting.
Richmond we shot 38 percent from the field. Lost by 11
George Mason we shot a whopping 35 percent from the field. Lost by 9
Duquesne we shot 27 percent from the field. 4 point loss
When you shoot below 40percent from the field it does not help your coach out. That's 3 L's that could have easily been W's if this team shot somewhere near average. Can't always blame coaching b/c Schmidt is known for getting teams to play together this time of the year. I think the talent is there but for some reason this team is not on the same page.
Banks takes a lot of criticism but he really does give 100%- he's diving for loose balls, he's drawing contact, etc.... And the few times he's on- he is really on fire-but you never know what scorer he's going to be.
This team has shot lights out at times but I have also seen this whole team miss easy wide open shot and shoot poorly. If they make those wide open shots the whole game and outcome would be different. It's not always on coaching. I get the stagnant remarks but it might be due to the players learning the offense. I really think this team should be more of a run and gun uptempo type team like Jan Van Breda Koff did with JR Bremer and crew. However, I don't know if they have the stamina.

Coach, so are you saying NO BLAME goes on Schmidt’s shoulders?
Have there been many games when Pride or Mika have shot poorly? It is on Schmidt that they are not getting enough shots. It’s Schmidts call to keep pounding the post and play super slow. I agree they are better when pushing the tempo.
Mika was a 4-year starter at Cincy and no evidence that he is a problem. It seems more likely he is frustrated … and justifiably so.
This team shoots poorly when Assa and Banks and sometimes Moses shoot poorly.
Banks can hustle all he wants but he cannot shoot and his defense has been awful. Same with Assa.
Do you really think Schmidt’s teams have come together the two previous seasons? You mean in the NIT run AFTER the Lofton-Adaway team seemed to have bad chemistry and other issues during the senior year? They peaked in December… and then in the NIT. They were mediocre in between. Very strange.
And last year the young Bonnies with 5 new starters peaked around January … and were awful down the stretch. And this year we are hot or cold.

What's missing here is QUALITY of shots. It's easy to blame "bad shooting" and not coaching but what if most of the shots have to be forced, off balance, in traffic, desperate shot clock heaves etc. because of no plays or no cuts or forcing to the center too much? Duquesne shot poorly from mid and long range on Saturday but had a ton of lay-ins, stuffs, alley oops so their shooting pct was better than ours. Yes, our shooters run hot and cold, like every other teams, and Assa and Banks weak overall, but the problem is not enough good shots available.

Curious: attendance reported was about 4700. Original seating at Reilly center has been decreased by reconfiguration What is current seating capacity; is attendance decreasing?

A lot of talk about the offense and I get it because there is a little too much standing around. But if you look at the metrics and scoring its on the higher end of Schmidt's offenses over the years. Almost 74 points per game nearly 8 points better than last year even
I think the bigger problem is the defense. I'm not used to Schmidt teams getting beat by the dribble drive so much as they have the last 2 seasons. And they are only giving up 31% from 3 which is good. But if you look at the 2point percentage scoring we are sub-250 in the nation.
Since teams generally don't shoot anything but layups and 3s these days, that tells you they are getting a lot of easy layups.

It is difficult to explain Bonnies season, by looking at their statistics. 1) Bonnies scoring this season is similar to the last 5 seasons. Currently Bona’s scoring is 9th in the A-10. The 2020-21 NCAA team (in parentheses) finished 1st in the A10, was also 9th in scoring in the conference. Minimal correlation between scoring and wins. — Scoring rank in A-10 last 5 seasons 9th, 14th, 6th, (9th) and 8th. — Bonnies record in A-10 last 5 seasons 7th, 8th, 4th, (1st) and 5th. ** Difficult to accept with entire starting lineup returning along with addition of Chuck and Mika, Bonnies have moved up just 1 spot from last season (8th to 7th). 2) Bona currently have the 4th best defense in the A10, giving up just 66.9 ppg. Bona also has the 4th best scoring margin outscoring their opponents by 6.8 ppg. The current Bonnies compare well defensively with 2020-21 team. They had the best defense in the A10 and 2nd best scoring margin outscoring opponents by 9.0 ppg. Bonnies current defensive standings, do not represent a team with a losing record in A10. 3) A-10 leader Richmond has 298 assists this season, which is just 9 more assists than the Bonnies. The frustration with the Bonnies is understandable. There were high expectations with entire starting lineup returning. Then you add Pride and Mika, who are both double digit scorers for the Bonnies. At the very least I expected Bonnies would be better than VCU and Richmond. — VCU is currently 4th in the A-10. They return just 1 player Zeb Jackson. Last season he was their 8th leading scorer averaging 5.2 ppg. — Richmond finished last season significantly below the Bonnies (11th). Richmond lost their only double digit scorer Tyler Burton (A-10’s 3rd leading scorer at 19.0 ppg). Also lost their 3rd leading scorer. Bonnies having a losing record in the A-10 is difficult to rationalize and accept. Hopefully Bonnies can finish strong for rest of conference games. Bona at times have shown a lot of talent. Strange to say, but if they get on a roll during A10 tournament they have the potential to win the A-10 title. Are we going to see this potential this season? atlantic10.com/stats.aspx?path=mbball&year=2023www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/virginia-commonwealth/men/2023.htmlwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/richmond/men/2022.html

Yes the scoring avg is 74 ppg but we’ve had 6 or 7 games with 89 points or more. A few of those were against teams with nets 300+… as well as VCU, Rhody and Joe’s. The Bonnies also have had several games where they struggled to reach 55 to 60 points (FAU, Richmond, Akron, Mason, Duquesne. It’s been a mystery.

No, I'm not saying Schmidt doesn't deserve blame. I honestly think this team is built to just play uptempo and scrap. I just don't think they do well slowing things down and running a set offense. I would like to see them just play run and gun. Slowing it down seems to make these current players stagnant. When they are moving and playing without thinking they seem to play better. I think it would be great to go to the conference tourney just playing run and gun. We have scorers but they get lost setting up the offense. I say bombs away.

Our roster is not built to jam the ball into the post while other 4 guys stand around watching. Coach had 4 years of OO in the post and seldom threw the ball inside - yet OO was a much better passer. We have shooters and ball handlers like never before. Evans is a Bona unicorn who can play well in space and sees the floor well. Why not utilize his talents along with Pride, Mika etc?
