70 plus years ago I became a Baseball fan, living in New York, my team was the Giants. Eventually. I became a Mets fan. Last year, the 2023 season. I had great hopes, the Mets were World Series contenders, their ace pitchers, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander were HOF pitchers. The team had very good to excellent players, everything looked great, and I was confident that this team was championship material. Well they underperformed, May and June were awful. I kept waiting, injuries were a major factor, but the hitting was suspect, the starting pitching was not doing well, relief pitching couldn't compensate. I kept on waiting, hoping for the turnaround. I waited, they won, but then started losing again. They never reached the level they should have. Eventually their owner traded off his high priced talent, making a statement "that hope is not a strategy".
The parallel between our Bonnies and last years Mets is striking. After every win I expect the turnaround, too much talent to be this bad. I keep hoping and then hope again, and again. At some point I had to realize, that hope doesn't make sense. That they are what they are, and although I will continue to watch, my hope has ended, at least until the next win.....hard to disconnect.

Excellent analogy Frank. This season has been like no other in my memory for the Bonnies. Is it senioritis? Are the coach’s rotations a problem. Maybe a bit of attitude by some of the key grad transfers who don’t always see eye to eye with the coach? Most likely a mixture of all of these factors.

Gee, why wouldn't they see eye to eye with the coach?
About half a dozen times every game Mika (or Luc or Daryl) at PG has to stop--while still dribbling--and glance over at Schmidt who is barking out a play (which rarely seems to materialize anyway and burns time off clock). Rarely if ever see this with other teams. And people wonder why we are so stagnant, and as time ticks away they simply toss it into Chad because you know he will get shot off, if no turn over.

This team plays best sharing the ball and spreading the floor. For some reason the game plan is to pack it in and not spread the floor. I think instead of running the offense through chad they spread out the floor and open things up. These players are not the type that play to be role players-they can all be really good at any time. Why not spread the offense out and get everyone involved. A couple of them will eventually get hot and that's when they play the best. When they focus on the inside game with venning they lose interest. Next, chad gets in foul trouble and that game plan takes a complete twist and by that time Schmidt has no clue what player is ON that night to lean towards them. Chad is tough and he dominated that last game but guys like pride, Mika, Yann had very few shots in the box score so they never got going. Pride deserves to get his fair amount of shots- he's the most consistent I think. I don't know..... ugh.

Woods and Pride don't really have a great two man game that I thought their friendship would exploit in games. Rarely does Woods drive to find a cutting or open at 3 point line Pride, usually it's Woods to the rim.

Bringing in 2 5th year starters presents a problems if they don’t buy into the coach’s system. Once the season starts going sideways what happens? How motivated are they? How does this affect team chemistry? This is a new wrinkle Schmidt has never had to work around. The NIL will be benefit the best players who will be paid to win championships for the wealthy schools and their alumni. Ask Rick Pitino how he can compete against schools with deep pockets.

Frank, My favorite teams: Mets Bills Sabres Bonnies
Over the course of the last 17 years (corresponding to Mark's tenure) the program that has given back the most pride/excitement/thrills has been Bonaventure men's basketball (by a lot). The Mets and the Bills have had a few moments that got my hopes up while the Sabres have accomplished close to nothing. Bona's mens basketball has provided memories that I cherish in that same time span.
Have faith my friend!
