You take out his HORRIFIC 2022 season and he had a pretty solid run. If he retires, Duquesne would be crazy not to hire Youngstown State's coach. He's done very well at a school that's rarely competitive in hoops

Wife has cancer. He might retire depending on prognosis (family decision). I wish him well.

Dambrot rescued the Dukes program. If he retires it’s likely the program will take a step or two back for a while. His enthusiasm for the school has made a difference and I’m not sure there are many others out there who can replicate that in the short term and who won’t just see the job as a stepping stone to something bigger.

There’s no real reason for Duquesne to take a step back unless they cheap out on a hire. If they opt for an assistant that is currently on their staff, it probably won’t work out too well. If they throw some $$$ behind a new hire then they can get any lower level D1 coach they’d like. Same for us, same for Saint Louis and same for the Dukes. The great equalizer in CBB has always been the head coach. A bad hire will set any program back and a good hire can take you to the next level. Rather have a $2M head coach with minimal NIL funds than an embarrassment of riches like SLU has with an absolute dud of a coach.

A quote from coach Schmidt from the Buffalo News this morning:
College head coaches leaving: I was down at St. Bonaventure earlier this week to visit with the men's basketball program. I asked coach Mark Schmidt about the football trend of college head coaches leaving to become assistants (like UCLA's Chip Kelly) or to become NFL coordinators (like Boston College's Jeff Hafley, who left for Green Bay), citing the constant NIL management duties. "I know there are especially older coaches who are getting a little bit fatigued," Schmidt said. "To me, (head coaching) is not nearly as fun, so I can see how it could drive (others away). I don't know if it will drive people to the NBA – there aren't as many jobs. But it will drive people to retire a little bit earlier."

For the record - Career Stats : Mark Schmidt 382-313 .550 3 NCAAs / 2 NITs (23 seasons) Travis Ford 489-365 .573 6 NCAAs / 5 NITs (27 seasons)

Ford nearly went 0 fer on NCAA trips at SLU

As Bill Parcells once stated : "You are what your record says you are."
Got no horse in this race - just presenting the data (Not a huge FORD fan either).
