Well the cost of traveling isn’t a real issue. Schools get PAID to play in this tournament, so what’s the real issue?

How does proactively turning down post season play opportunities support recruiting? So we get thumped because we show up with 7 players...At least we can say we got NIT bid...Did Rhody? Fordham? G.Mason? etc etc? Would they say no thanks... Only injured players were Chad and Noel who both played vs. Dukes though banged up.
Have to wonder if Barry would have put off portal entry Monday if had accepted NIT bid on Sunday and had chance to show his stuff (probably with many minutes, if injuries really a factor with big men). So if we had won on Saturday and by some miracle beat VCU on Sunday, would we have been too "banged up" to accept an NCAA bid? Something doesn't pass the sniff test here.

How about if we win Saturday and lost Sunday? We would have ran and told the NCAA we can’t do the NIT because we’re too hurt 40 minutes before an NCAA bid?

The more I think about it, the more I feel that it was the players decision and the AD and coach are not going to throw them under a bus. Good move by both of them since we are going to have recruit 7-9 new players. It would not look good for recruiting if they bashed the players. I don’t like it and I think the portal timing needs to be moved to April. It seems like the school would much rather listen to us Fans and Alumi bitch about how they handled it than rat out the players for not wanting to play.

I think I recall in the past our coach saying something to the effect that, he first ask the players if they want to play in the NIT. Player Quotes Kyle Lofton, G, Sr. On Bouncing Back from the Saint Louis Loss “It shows how special the group is. Whoever we play, we want to win, no matter if it is in the NIT or the NCAA (Tournament). Whatever game we go into, we want to win that game. It shows how tough we are. (Myself) mentally, from the last game, I needed this game. My teammates knew that. They asked us if we wanted to play and I told them ‘yes’ right away. I needed another game on my belt. We all came together (and said) ‘let's play.’ Now we’re here so we want to win it all.”

From SBUnfurled on Twitter: "Two years ago today myself and TONS of alums Venmo'd students to road trip to Charlottesville, VA, for an NIT game against Virginia. "Going to MSG a week later, one bus caught on fire, another emergency hatch blew off, and a 3rd was pulled over en route to MSG. "Road logistics???"
Also from them: "From what I've heard, everyone [players] found out we declined the same time we did."

Lets be honest, Manhertz was hoping his decision here would've never been made public. And clearly it wouldn't have if not for the graphics team at ESPN.
That is deceptive and shameful

That is deceptive and shameful Why do you say "his" decision--they say made with Schmidt and coaches. You think not true? You think they'd put out statement including coaches if not true? You think Schmidt not partly on the hook for this?

You think Schmidt not partly on the hook for this? I dont know what to believe anymore. I just trust Schmidt more than Manhertz as he's been here 20 years not 20 months. It also would've been odd for Schmidt to tell reporters he is hoping for an NIT bid on Sunday, as he did, if he knew we were going to decline. I blame Manhertz, you can form your own conclusions

Schmidt probably wanted to play, but they didn't have enough bodies to play. Right or wrong, Manhertz probably wanted to protect the players from the backlash they would receive if he just said they players refused to play.
Sadly, players are in control here...not the coach or AD.

If the future is going to be NCAA or bust, do not expect much postseason participation in years to come based on how the NCAA Tournament is trending for the A-10.

Joe "Brown Indian" Manhertz, and President Jeff G need to resign or be fired.......this a complete embarrassment to Bonas.....what a disgrace!
They turned down a post season appearance because there was no buses available or Bonas could afford none WTF.....complete and total misrepresentation.....resign or be fired........

According to the article, we did not turn down a bid. We said don't ask. This is how you turn down a bid. Only teams willing to play in the event are selected. No one actually turns down a bid. You simply say you’re not willing to be considered. When the brackets are announced is when a team finds out they got in.

There are a few things at play here that really need to be fixed.
Number one is athletic department leadership. How does the head coach come out on Saturday and say, "yep, we'd love to play," and then decide along with the athletics administration on Sunday that they'll pass? The last time we were in the NIT, Mark Schmidt parlayed that run into nearly another job, and ultimately a raise of more than half a million dollars. It's not hard to read between the lines on what pretty clearly happened. As soon as we lost, players started to check out. No one gathered the team and said "hey, guys, we have a chance to actually make the NIT and make a legitimate run." I'm going to speculate - and key word here is speculate - that in addition to those who entered the transfer portal, a few more upperclassman would have preferred not to play. You can guess the two I'm hinting at. And there was never a leader (be it either the AD or the head coach) getting the team in the room and explaining the history of the tournament to the university, the value the tournament can create moving forward even if players are leaving, and the way the fanbase would react should this come out.
Number two is we need a director of athletics that understands our university community and doesn't use this position to enhance the resume and try to step out. The scary part is when Mark retires (and many believe that's going to be after next season), what are the odds that the AD who isn't around much doesn't choose a coach who's simply going to use this to step-up. That happens and can work at some places. It does not work here.
Number three is there is ZERO public relations coordination in athletics. SBU has long gotten away with the Olean Times Herald being the only game in town, with the occasional check-in from the Buffalo News. This ABSOLUTELY crushed us during the end of the JVBK days, and it rears its ugly head every now and then since. With the landscape of college coverage and media changing, the most impactful person covering SBU right now is @sbunfurled on twitter. That's crazy to say, but it's true. You can see this year how disgusted he's been with the coaching staff (multiple shots at Schmidt) and now the university. How administration doesn't realize his value (right or wrong, it's there) is beyond me.
This is really not a good look with the evolution of Team Unfurled. I'd be very upset if I were those guys.

Was talking to another Bandwagoner earlier and his theory makes alot of sense. This seems more on the players, Especially the 3 that went in the Portal, why did they have to declare so soon, not seeing the P6s coming for them. So the team was supposed to head down to Seton Hall with 7 players with 2 of the BONNIES' centers hurting? If they had gone on to the NCAA tourney, they would have had more time to rest and the 3 probably would have waited.
