Almost one week has gone by and no university official has formally addressed the events that have transpired this week. From a PR perspective, this is mind-boggling. I find it interesting that Dr. Gingerich, Tom Missel or Steve Mest have not made themselves available to address the NIT issue and the reported resignation of AD Manhertz.
The lack of communication has led to numerous rumors and many comments/ opinions - some positive and unfortunately some mean spirited words. This has been a PR blunder by the university. You can’t tell me no one from the university is available for comment. Is everyone on vacation?
If/when the university makes themselves available to the media I want these questions answered:
1. Provide a full explanation why Bonas “withdrew” themselves from NIT consideration. 2. Why no comment from Coach Schmidt? Mark must have some thoughts on the issue. 3. Did Manhertz resign or not?
Finally, is the Board of Trustees somewhat responsible for this debacle? The BOT hired Manhertz. While it appears Joe was qualified for the AD position did the BOT discuss the importance of the Bona alumni? From the very beginning it seemed like Joe was not a good fit for Bonas. Perhaps the BOT was too hasty with Tim Kenney.
Every hour and day that goes by without the university making some official comment the worse this situation is getting. Please Dr. Gingerich, Tom or Steve, make an official statement to heal the wounds so we can move on from this situation.
I love St. Bonaventure University!

Bonas operates in secrecy. We might as well wait for smoke like it’s the Vatican. DePerro is the only leader in recent memory that attempted to have some transparency. We can only hope the BoT might change that.

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GINGERICH
Dear Alumni and Friends:
I just wanted you all to be aware that we issued the following press release this morning to the campus community and media. I spoke with senior athletics staff members this morning, who then communicated the news to their entire athletics staff.
Pax et Bonum,
Dr. Jeff Gingerich University President
For Immediate Release: Manhertz steps down as AD at St. Bonaventure University ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., March 23, 2024 — Dr. Jeff Gingerich, president of St. Bonaventure University, has accepted the resignation of Athletics Director Joe Manhertz Friday night. Manhertz was named AD in August of 2021. “I want to thank Joe for the contributions he’s made to the Athletics Department the last three years,” Gingerich said. “Joe made a number of excellent coaching hires and was instrumental in helping to launch the athletics pillar of our Bolder Bonaventure fundraising campaign. We wish him the very best in his career.” A decision on naming an interim athletics director will be made early next week, Gingerich said. A search for a permanent AD will begin in April.

Jeff - not really enough here. No apologies from you etc… Staying low and hoping this one goes away won’t work - you should have gotten out front of this one - may not be too late.
I spent many years in public relations and have been through a few corporate crises, this is not the way to handle it.
PS - Coach you need to make some kind of statement too - double down on Bonnie’s and then move on.

His boss, Joe Manhertz screwed up and was fired for the massive screwup..........Joe's boss is Jeff G......where was Jeff? He should have countermanded the Manhertz decision but obviously did not. If want to blame someone.....then the buck stops at the President's Office desk on the second floor of Hopkins Hall............

IMO, the attitude of many here that this was an issue for the school president to become involved in reflects zero awareness of what happened during the scandal. That was the direct result of the school president becoming involved in, and over-ruling, the decision of the school officer who had been given the responsibility for making that decision and placing the interest of the basketball program paramount. It would have been a terrible decision for Jeff G. to do so again in this matter. The PR issue could and should have been handled better, but the contention that the President should have stepped in and taken charge of a basketball decision is very, very wrong IMO. We need to learn from that mistake, not repeat it. We were fortunate not to get the death penalty before - I’m not so sure we’d have been so fortunate this time. The power of the NCAA has been greatly diminished in recent years and I think they’d have used this issue to look tough and hammer the little guy - us!

During the scandal, Wick interfered with an NCAA RULES violation. I agree that should never happen. In this case, everyone involved should have stepped in and overruled a STUPIDITY violation. That should always happen.

As I recall, Barb Questa was the compliance officer when we let in the guy with a plumbing certificate under JVBK. This is not to bad mouth Barb, but to point out she has been a good employee at SBU, but when you have your boss making a decision you may not agree with, you have no choice. If Barb had not signed off, she would have lost her job, albeit with a possible good settlement a couple of years later. Ryan had even less control over decision making.

Barb was the Bona Compliance Officer at the time of Jamil Terrell's welder scandal. At the time she made clear to Dr Wick her opposition to the ship, citing precisely he had a certificate and not a required associates degree. She was on record in opposing the ship but was overuled by Wick. JvBK was well aware he was ineligible but felt it would not be found out. Terrible judgement as was his assessment of Terrell's shill level.
