Most are familiar with the Welder Scandal but some may be unaware or have forgotten some of the details. I have the 17 page "Final Report from the Basketball Program Review Special Committee Report to the University Trustees" dated April 15, 2003. Here are some direct quotes from the report that makes clear Barb Questa's role in not bowing to the enormous pressure from Dr Wickenheiser.
"During the period April through May 2001, Terrell's eligibility status was being conducted for the University by Questa. At issue was whether Terrell's certificate of welding degree from Coastal Georgia CC was considered the equivalent to the different Associate Degrees awarded by the school."
Questa had raised concerns of Terrell's ineligibility. I believe she realized early on he was not eligible. Wick, son Kort and JvBK didn't want to hear it.
"On May 8, 2002 in a letter from CGCC directed to then University Registrar Russell stated that the certificate programs are not considered equivalent to the associate degree programs."
Questa informed Lane and he informed Wick.
Subsequently, on more than one occasion she was directed not to communicate directly with any members of the men's basketball staff. "In Sept 2002 Steve Campbell, an individual with no experience in NCAA rules compliance, with the responsibility of serving as the point person."
Wick wanted to gag Barb who was a thorn in his side.
"Concerning Lane's involvement in this violation, the Committee finds that Lane made a determined effort to bring Terrell's ineligibility issue to the fore & avert the issue of being noncompliant. However, these efforts, laudable as they may have been, were then followed by his execution of the 2002-2003 NCAA Certification of Eligibility in Oct of 2002 for the men's basketball team, which included Terrell- A DOCUMENT THAT QUESTA REFUSED TO SIGN per her June 12 interoffice memo to Lane. While one may sympathize with the conditions under which Lane worked, he should not have signed the certificate."
Barb had to endure an enormous amount of pressure from Wick to look the other way and sign!
Bona is fortunate to have Barb step in as interim Co-Director of Athletics / Senior Woman Administrator as a search is conducted for an AD. Her wealth of experience (32 yrs at Bona) and Franciscan values will serve SBU well.
