Christian is a proven winner at the mid-major level and a class act. Met him a few times at MAC events in recent years. He will turn around the Griffs. Find it hard to believe he would accept that job. Christian was still getting paid by BC until end of this season. I could see him in the A10 or higher mid-major like SLU, but obviously there was not interest. He played at Rhody. JC took Kent to post-season 5 times (two NCAAs) and Ohio U once to the big dance. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/coaches/jim-christian-1.html

LAZY hire by CC. I always hate these re treads...Guy's 60 years old and has never coached in the NIL or transfer portal era. He had a good run 20 years ago at Kent State I guess.

Agreed, but it is a simple formula. Bring in a name, hopefully generate a buzz and put some fannies in the seats, and hope he can coach them up a bit. Meanwhile, he is gone in 4 or 5 and they move on.

Agreed he seems like the same guy (Reggie Witherspoon) that they just got rid of! At least Reggie was Buffalo through and through

Retread? That’s a “lazy” description - LOL - not to mention derogatory. Christian is 2 years younger than Schmidt and has been to the NCAA tourney 4 times at mid-majors. That is one more bid than our beloved coach.
So you’re only a retread if you take the $1.8 million offered by UMass and leave there 4 years later … but if you turn it down and stay at Bonas? Not a retread.
Jim Baron did a pretty solid job as Griffs coach when he was in his fourth head coaching job, at age 58.
Who was the last A10 coach in their first head coaching job to have great success? Maybe Shaka Smart 15 years ago? It ain’t that easy or common … and most AD’s don’t want to hire the unknown.
George Mason made it to the Final 4 with 54-year old Jim Larranaga as head coach in 2006 … the same guy who led Miami to the Final 4 last season at age 72.
Some old retreads got something left in the tank. I expect Christian to revive the Griffs program in a year or two.

This is Christian’s 5th stop. Not sure why bigcat compared him to Schmidt who has been here at one stop for 17+ years
Also fun fact, Christian has only made the NCAA tourney twice- at any school- not 4 times. Maybe he’s thinking of a different guy or something

Considering the horrific facilities at CC, this is an excellent hire, a hire with a proven track record. He will be good for the Little Three.......now its time for CC to get a real field house.....WTH !!

Always thought Witherspoon would have success at Canisius. Sorry the clock ran out. The Koessler CenterIs part of the problem….and the end of the Aud. Didn’t help Canisius either.

What are Canisius NIL offerings like and how do they compare to Bonas?

What are Canisius NIL offerings like and how do they compare to Bonas? I’d be shocked if they have anything of significance. They average a touch over 800 fans a game and haven’t been to the tourney in nearly 30 years. Add in the fact that most MAAC schools spend no money on MBB, and the conference is one of the least stable in terms of roster continuity and you get a recipe for disaster. Fairfield and Siena probably have something decent but still not enough to retain or attract top talent. That’s why this hire is not that inspiring. Canisius is one of the hardest jobs in the MAAC….much like BC in the ACC and TCU was back in the day. Christian struggled at both stops. He did well at Kent State and Ohio. Two schools where multiple coaches have experienced success since his departure. Can JC win at Canisius? Maybe yes, maybe no, but you’d think they’d opt for a coach that has operated in this era or at the very least a coach that has been at the depths of D1 hell before. I don’t get why teams are so afraid of hiring coaches that have dominated at the D2 ranks for decades. Tobin Anderson and Jerrod Calhoun are two coaches that have done well at the lower level and then got a chance to coach lower d1 ball and have not disappointed.

I don't see Christian moving the needle at all at Canisius. I could be completely wrong, but it was probably a bit of a desperate move on both parties involved at this point. Canisius gets to bring in a former P6 coach and Christian gets off the couch. Likely not to make a difference in the program or MAAC. I think we're about to see Siena become pretty dominant in the MAAC for the next 5+years. With GMac going there - you know he demanded to have resources, he connects with recruits and transfers, they have solid facilities and fan-base....oh, and will have access to Adam Weitsman's bank account. They are set up for success immediately and will be a good OOC game for the Bonnies for the foreseeable future.
