Doesnt he have some ridiculously low number of scholarships to divide amongst the team?

The fully funded men's lacrosse and women's basketball teams aren't much better. Winning percentages of .069, .100 and .133, respectively. Very few teams other than men's basketball exceed or even approach .500 in any given season.

This season has been horrific. What are we 2-25? But not only that, being humiliated in terms of getting buried every single game. It’s quite incredible. We don’t lose by 1-2 runs… we lose by 10 and 12. The softball program has been pretty much a joke for years. The coach needs to hang it up. He demonstrates annually he is in way over his head/ step aside dude

The financial pot is only so big. Maybe the answer rests with fewer sports for both men and women. I agree that this program should be evaluated along with the staff.

I assume baseball has the same and they are getting much better players. Let’s stop covering up for a guy who should have been gone decades ago. There is no excuse not to be at least an average softball team in NYS with the immense talent all around New York.

At the moment, the NCAA minimum is 14 sports. And, Title 9 is still in place. With limited resources, it's always going to be hard to fund most of these teams to be successful. On a more positive note, women's lacrosse is competitive. Not great, but certainly competitive. I might be wrong, but I think that they are fully funded under NCAA rules. They didn't used to be, but I think they, or some other women's team(s), had to be to comply with Title 9 once men's lacrosse was added.

Folks
While the following is 10 plus years old info, I think it is still pretty accurate. For a long time I coached girls ASA softball (think AAU but for softball). Several of the girls I coached ended up playing at Bonas. So I had a good relationship with the program. Bona softball used to get two scholarships, and a very small budget, to work with. RES, I do not think that changed with lacrosse (plus I am pretty confident that the only sports that Bona has that have the full allocation of allowed scholarships are MBB and WBB). In comparison, at the time, both Niagara and Canisius each had 4 plus scholarships to spread among 20 plus players a year - coach's choice on how to allocate. There is one school, maybe two, in the A10 where the school gives their softball team the full amount of scholarships. That is Fordham, who has probably won 75% of more of the league's softball titles over the years. (Mass had a good run for a few years, cause they had a stud pitcher from Newark NY - Brandi B - who went on to pitch for USA softball). So most times, Bona is running out a "JV team" against a Varsity team. And the results reflect that.
In softball you need one stud pitcher, and a great catcher. All other positions are important but not overall "game changers". With two scholarships, you might be able to cover those two key positions. But it is hard to recruit a great pitcher, when the rest of your team easily could be playing DIII ball behind you. And so that is Coach Mike's issue. Girls who play for him want to play college ball, and are probably great individuals. For a number of years, his team was either one or two in team GPAs (battling with the swim teams). But do not judge Coach based on his record - he probably knows that every time he takes the field, there is probably girls sitting on the opposing bench that could start for Bonas.
As far as the talent in WNY and Upstate NY for softball? I can only think of two players from Rochester that had very good careers playing for a Power 5 team in the last twenty years. Plus Brandi from Newark. Buff has a couple of players going to Power 5 teams this year - lets see how they do. All of the players going to Power 5 schools play their ASA for teams outside of NY - usually going South or West for their summer teams. Our spring seasons here are too short, you cannot practice outside in the winter, etc. So the talent in WNY and Upstate NY is ok - but not anywhere near other states. Also, remember just cause someone has gotten a scholarship to play at a top program does not mean it is a full ride (or close to it). I have a close friend who's daughter ended up on a golf scholarship at a Top 10 ranked school. She had won prestigious amateur tournaments, was a -5 handicap (yes = negative), and her scholarship was . . . $2K a year. Now she loved her career, it opened up tons of doors for her afterwards, but $2K a year.

'81, this is from the News in 2017:
"St. Bonaventure plans to ramp up to the maximum of 12.6 scholarships allotted for men’s lacrosse over the next four years."
I can send you the link if you would like. As to the women, I remember being told they would ramp up to the maximum as well to stay within Title IX boundaries. I can't find any source online as to whether they did so.

If you see alot of players on the team from Arizona, California, Florida, and the Carolinas, you will know the scholarships have arrived.
