I hope the 24 -25 Bonnies show kindness to their teammates. Sniping at each other would create another Bandwagon. It seems the most recent Bonaventure team suffered from lack of respect. Can we respect each other on this board? Not a lot to ask.

LET'S HOPE. Melvin and lejae comparison to Houston is over 20 years difference. The latest juco with big expectations, Linton Brown, never really produced and he was supposed to be a juco stud. Not sure what all happened with him but these new guys do look pretty good.

Welcome to Melvin. Nice addition.
A few points about transfers related to Bona history, though the game and environment is much different today.
No guarantee on how a player’s skills will translate to a higher level (or lower level) of competition. It can work both ways.
Posley was a decent Juco and MAC player (9 ppg). With the Bonnies he averaged 18 ppg (36% 3pt) and was an All-A10 player. Cannot recall if he sat out one year?? He joined a talented, veteran SBU team.
Mobley was a stud scorer at Central Conn… became a prolific scorer and cold-blooded closer in two seasons with the Bonnies’ veteran roster after sitting one year.
Stockyard (Juco transfer) battled numerous injuries for two years at SBU. In his 5th and 6th he became a solid all-league player and one of the top big-game hunters and leaders in program history.
Kevin Houston scored 7ppg at Miami FL. Increased to 19.5 ppg at SBU … a team loaded with talent and experience. Not sure if he sat one year??
Jalen Adaway was an 8-point scorer at Miami OH … became an All-A10, all-around stud at SBU in his 5th season (15 ppg, 6 reb). Also joined a veteran roster.
Mike Sheehey was a seldom used player at Cuse. Sat out one season and made an immediate impact on a veteran Bona team … 13 pts, 3 reb, 2 assists over two seasons.
Transfers who were solid: Hall, Matthews, Kloof, C.Johnson
Transfers who were busts: Planutis, Poyser, Coulibaly, Roberts, Shaw, Hill, Q.Adams, Brown, Onokoh
Surely I am missing many others but with a handful of transfers this season, chances are one or two will become studs at SBU!!
EDIT: forgot one other point … most of the best Bona transfers joined rosters loaded with experience. This roster is almost entirely “newbies”.

Posley didn’t have to sit out a year, he played 1 year at Ball State and then transferred down to JuCO for 1 year to avoid sitting out, before coming here to Bonas. Houston I believe did sit out. He sat out the year we got an at-large berth 1999-2000 season. Imagine him with that team? Wow

I think the transfer portal and immediate eligibility of transfers has changed things. It used to be that if there was a specific need on a team and you could not recruit a high schooler with the talent to immediately fill that need a few months after graduating from high school, you had to look at JUCOs. Now you can fill that need with a transfer who isn’t required to sit the first year, so you look there instead of the JUCO ranks and get someone a little older and with D1 experience.

Now most teams need to plug 4 or 5 holes each season … maybe more. Not the same recruiting game. More of a crap shoot. Do these guys learn to like and respect each other (bond) and the coaches fast enough?
I cringe now when I read that Schmidt says “this guy fits our system”. Seriously? I realize that coaches have to be quoted in these PR announcements… but what system did we run the last two seasons?
He might have a new/different system but it’s not recognizable, like in the past. All coaches are learning to adapt. Mark has never been a quick changer but time will tell.

lets harken back to the early 80's and BONA'S first ever juco transfer , ROB GARBADE , who was a good PF. moving to the more recent past, lets honor another good juco transfer, OGO ADEGBOYE, a nice PG.

Coach keeps criticizing Bonnies JUCOs and only brings up Linton Brown as his proof. By the way Linton had a severe case of COVID and played just 10 games. Linton with 13 minutes per game was the 6th man on a team with a solid starting lineup (Osun, Adaway, Dom, Jaren and Lofton). There wasn't many minutes for anyone on the bench. Curious with production of Schmidt’s JUCOs. I was very surprised with Schmidt’s success rate with JUCOs and a D3 recruit (level of play is lower than JUCOs). * Stars — Jonathan Hall, Marcus Posley, Eric Mosley, Courtney Stockard and Charlon Kloff (played at D3 Guilford). * Double digit scorers - Jaren Holmes, Andell Cumberbatch, Chris Johnson and Ogo Adegboye. * Part time starters or top reserve - Ray Blackburn, D’Lancy Carter, Iakeem Alston, Linton Brown, Jalen Shaw and Chris Dees. * Minimal PT — Eddie Creal and Ndenye Gueye. Linton Brown a 2nd team JUCO All-American is the only highly rated JUCO, who didn't live up to expectations. A healthy Linton averaged 8.6 ppg and shot a solid 37% from 3s, which was his reported strength while at Coastal Carolina. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/men/2024.html

Its an approach that worked for many years and its nice to get back to it. Hinton, Jones, Council and now Folarin are all coming in with JUCO experience next year

Olean Times Herald article “Council Jr.: New team, same NCAA goal with Bonnies.” Following are a few highlights from an interesting article on Melvin council. — “I’m gonna bring a lot of energy,” he said. “I’m gonna make sure my teammates are always up. I don’t ever want to let my teammates down. This is a big year for me, I got to be a leader on and off the court, and that’s what you’re going to see. “I’m versatile, I could do a lot of everything, but my game stands out when I make others around me better.” — PART OF what drew Council to the Bonnies was the close bond he has with now-teammate Miles Rose and the connection he has with the area. The Rochester native noted that he has spent much of his basketball career in and around New York City, which made it difficult for his family in Western New York to see him play. But now that he’s closer to home, he anticipates having his family in the stands at the Reilly Center will be a big boost in an already rambunctious atmosphere. — Council noted. “(St. Bonaventure) is only two hours away, so I expect to have a packed house every home game, even away at Buffalo and Niagara. I can’t wait. With a packed house that’s when I’m more explosive and jump higher.” — As one of the most experienced players on the Bona roster, he stressed the importance of communicating early. That way, the team will be able to figure out where they are weak and fill those gaps. “It’s, first off, about team bonding,” Council said. “So, we already got a feel. We just have to just put it all together. The main thing we have to work on is helping each other out on defense.” — But, it was his father who eventually got into his head and expressed the importance of becoming the most well-rounded player he could be. Those words cemented in Council’s mind and that desire has turned into a hunger to prove he’s the best on the court every night. www.oleantimesherald.com/newsletter/council-jr-new-team-same-ncaa-goal-with-bonnies/article_a584d2b8-43cf-11ef-affd-a7412b00f66a.html

With each passing year, there are more high-level D1 caliber basketball players coming out of the Rochester area. It makes no sense that for most of the last 20 years we've only had 2-3 players from Rochester on the roster. I don't need to rehash the players from ROC we've passed on, but clearly kids from the area think highly of SBU and would love to play for us.
Hopefully Council and Rose have a great Bona experience and enjoy the opportunity to play in front of friends and family each home game.

Nice article on Council in a recent edition of the OTH. He describes himself as an outside shooter first, although he is working on other aspects of his game to become a well-rounded player. But we need confident shooters badly and Council may be that guy, or at least one of hopefully several we’ll need in 24-25. Certainly he starts with the right mentality and doesn’t seem short in confidence. Obviously we’ll see how that plays out on the court but it appears he’s starting with the right attitude.
