Coach - I agree with your basic point, but man, that “not trying to be rude” idea about the area didn’t even last to the end of the post, did it -even getting flipped in all caps?. I mean the area isn’t the best in the country or even western NY, and certainly has its challenges, particularly with employment opportunities, but hell, it not that bad, is it? Seriously. And if safety and, I dont know, outdoors & nature is your thing, I know it's hard to believe but there are some people who like that stuff, then Bona's is amazing. The River Valley Trail you can literally start on campus and it is a truly beautiful 6 mile trail all times of the year. go for a 6 mile walk around some of our A10 friends, maybe East Germantown in Philly (LaSalle), or Carver in Richmond (VCU) or you could walk 6 miles around in St. Louis haha talk about "shitholes" now

Both are considered some of the best urban parks in the United States. Yeah, Olney isn't a good area by any stretch, but there are $1M houses 3 miles west of La Salle, so clearly many people make it work for them in that area. VCU has a lot of beautiful homes near their campus too and Richmond is a nice medium-size city. SLU's campus is very nice as is the area near the campus (Central West End). A lot of people love SBU and a lot couldn't stomach living in an area like Olean. To each their own. No need to slander solid A10 schools to make us "look better."

Not even sure what the discussion is about. He took the job knowing that it was career suicide. He made the basketball program recognized for the first time in many many years. His salary paid by the school is like 900k and the rest has been alumni donating to his salary to keep him at SBU. He saved the program and has kept them relevant in the Atlantic 10. I"m not trying to be rude but Olean/Allegany is not an area that highly recruited players want to attend when stacked up against other offers. Yet, Coach Schmidt has continuously landed and developed talent. Recruiting is the biggest battle and some of you on this board seem to think that this area is worthy of the top recruits. Most of the bandwagon members can't even talk their own relatives to returning to this area let alone trying to convince an above average college basketball talent to play at SBU. It's not easy to get players and Schmidt has landed a lot of talent. He has also developed a lot of mediocre talent. Dayton coach gets 2.25 mill VCU coach gets 1.7 mill Umass Frank Martin 1.6 mill in his first full year So Schmidt getting 900k from the University and Whatever from alumni is because he has done a good job. Also, he never left for other opportunities. He may have interviewed and leveraged offers to feel out what he was worth but who wouldn't do that??? He took the job of a program that hit rock bottom. So what if he interviewed and used that for leverage to see what he was worth. The funny thing is... Most of this board can't even convince relatives that left this area to come back and visit. Anyone that wants to complain about Schmidt should realistically look at the challenges he overcame to make The BONNIES a real name in the A-10. The guy is probably worth way more than the 2 million if you really consider the work that goes into recruiting to this SHITHOLE area. MY gosh Says “he’s not trying to be rude” then proceeds to incorrectly call our Alma mater a shithole Douchebag Never called SBU a shithole. I called this area of WNY a Shithole you Shithead. Mainly, I was trying to point out that this area is probably really hard to attract basketball talent. KCC I really don't care about you calling me a douchebag. Sorry to offend you, I know you are very sensitive.

I must’ve missed those beautiful parks in lasalle when I was there for Andrew Nicholson’s 2000 point game. I got in and out though cause it was rough I didn “slander” I legitimately pointed out some neighborhoods within a 6 mile walk around those campuses. Slandering our own town is cool though here on this site I guess, but it was wrong for me to take a swipe at rival schools that freely shit on us all the time on their boards

As a Philly area native who moved out of the area, I don’t know how TripAdvisor comes up with its lists, but visiting the closed Eastern State Asylum as the number one place to visit in Philly, is, well, crazy! Even assuming some interesting historic features have been incorporated into the site, it’s still a massive, ugly, decommissioned jail. No way that’s better than most of the several “it really happened here” sites in or close to downtown. And I visit TripAdvisor fairly often, but they got that wrong.

On a more positive tangent I will say that I have it on good authority that it is Always Sunny In Philadelphia!

We don’t need 10 posts and nasty cuss words to document that SBU is tough recruiting challenge. Coach has done a great job of bringing in talent … either under the radar or from other programs.
Schmidt has said many times that kids choose SBU partly because they can focus on hoops with little distractions — or to get away from a bad situation in their own neighborhoods or city. Or they may, crazy as it seems to some, like SBU, the small environment, importance of Bonnies hoops within the community, and the people. Now it might be mainly about NIL money. Who knows?
Please stop acting like 9 years olds calling people names and using profanity. We all love or hate our hometowns. Most students like myself attended SBU because of the education, athletics, community etc. Has little to do with the Olean area which most students did not frequent often back in the day other than to find cheap beer … and probably still don’t.
