www.oleantimesherald.com/newsletter/schmidt-despite-major-challenges-coaching-still-fun/article_6128df16-2f60-11ef-8e3b-ef8e4cc16c95.htmlAttached is the 2nd of two articles by JP. Hopefully, you can open it if you don't subscribe. Just a couple comments: Osun getting $400 thousand? He was a good player but someone is due a refund. Never developed an offense. He didn't even end up starting did he? That sums up what a joke NIL is. He mentions a salary cap for players but doesn't mention coaches. Not surprising. Understand the $$ is coming from different pots but. . . Talking about records but he could have just said they might as well shut down the Hall of Fame (at least for men). There definitely won't be any new/current players addded. Maybe there's hope for Barry Atkinson after all.

Thanks for the article. Boy I love Mark’s attitude. It would be understandable if he thought: “You know, I’ve had success building a program based on recruiting under the radar guys and working to develop them into all league or near quality players over four years and at my age, the NCAA is changing the rules to make that much harder, almost impossible. I am too old for this crap, I quit”
But instead, he’s committed to going with the flow and keeping at it, and I am certain our Program will benefit in coming years, no matter how high the deck is stacked against us.The concern I expressed in an earlier post a couple of weeks ago was unwarranted. Bona hoops will survive and thrive.

Ceharv, $2M salary makes that an easier decision. Everything today is money driven. This has nothing to do with Mark as a person. It is simply human nature.

joe48, Money often ruins people. His attitude of continuing to work hard has everything to do with Mark as a person. I suggest recognizing and appreciating it.

It has everything to do with Mark Schmidt as a person. He works hard and we benefit!! I don't care what SBU pays him, he is worth every penny!!! To believe that EVERYTHING is money driven is one cynical view.

People have short memories. Isn’t Mark the same guy that used an offer from UMass to get a new deal. I am not saying anything about negative about Mark’s character so please don’t read too much into my post. It is always about the money.

Mark Schmidt is the best coach in SBU history and I don’t think it’s close. Mark saved the program and the university. How quickly some forget that nobody wanted us after the scandal and after Solomon. It will be a sad day when he decides to retire.

Every time I read this board Mark is making another $200K.
I guess I shouldn't visit as often.

How quickly some forget that nobody wanted us after the scandal and after Solomon. It will be a sad day when he decides to retire. Not even sure what the discussion is about. He took the job knowing that it was career suicide. He made the basketball program recognized for the first time in many many years. His salary paid by the school is like 900k and the rest has been alumni donating to his salary to keep him at SBU. He saved the program and has kept them relevant in the Atlantic 10. I"m not trying to be rude but Olean/Allegany is not an area that highly recruited players want to attend when stacked up against other offers. Yet, Coach Schmidt has continuously landed and developed talent. Recruiting is the biggest battle and some of you on this board seem to think that this area is worthy of the top recruits. Most of the bandwagon members can't even talk their own relatives to returning to this area let alone trying to convince an above average college basketball talent to play at SBU. It's not easy to get players and Schmidt has landed a lot of talent. He has also developed a lot of mediocre talent. Dayton coach gets 2.25 mill VCU coach gets 1.7 mill Umass Frank Martin 1.6 mill in his first full year So Schmidt getting 900k from the University and Whatever from alumni is because he has done a good job. Also, he never left for other opportunities. He may have interviewed and leveraged offers to feel out what he was worth but who wouldn't do that??? He took the job of a program that hit rock bottom. So what if he interviewed and used that for leverage to see what he was worth. The funny thing is... Most of this board can't even convince relatives that left this area to come back and visit. Anyone that wants to complain about Schmidt should realistically look at the challenges he overcame to make The BONNIES a real name in the A-10. The guy is probably worth way more than the 2 million if you really consider the work that goes into recruiting to this SHITHOLE area. MY gosh

Dayton, Philadelphia, Bronx, Washington, and Chicago are a lot worse. Actually, Bonas' is a great place to study and get an education. But basketball players don't do that anymore. Schmidt is doing a good job at a small school.

Coach - I agree with your basic point, but man, that “not trying to be rude” idea about the area didn’t even last to the end of the post, did it -even getting flipped in all caps?. I mean the area isn’t the best in the country or even western NY, and certainly has its challenges, particularly with employment opportunities, but hell, it not that bad, is it?
