I just read an article regarding a UNLV QB leaving school now because the university is not honoring its financial commitment to the player. There seems to be some consensus that the college students athletes will need to organize a union. There will be potential for lawsuits unless there is a formal structure put in place. The NCAA is being pushed aside by the big money as players in all sports are being poached by schools with deeper pockets. Trying to put a competitive team together every year will be more challenging for coaches of small schools. I also expect that fan interest will wane if the rosters are subject to a yearly revolving door. Interested in other’s thoughts.

All is not lost to the Almighty $. After today, both Army and Navy are 4-0 in college football and likely on track for bowl games. It’s all about finding the right guys. Obviously Bona hoops is not analogous to the military academies, but then again we only need a few guys of the right mindset, meaning someone who will not chase every last dollar. I put my money on Schmidt and Woj and the rest of the staff finding them, essentially putting us ahead of the Programs filled with yearly transfers chasing money and finding frustration instead. We can actually come out of this by providing something different and special, which I suggest we always have. Remember how everyone always thought Bonas couldn’t compete for recruits because it location was so isolated “there was nothing to do there.” But what did Schmidt do? He turned that supposed negative around by selling the location, telling kids and parents that the isolation meant Bonas is where you should go if you’re serious about basketball and want to focus on it and not be distracted by everything else there was to do. Buck up, we have had success taking a supposed negative and turning it into a positive. Have faith and Trust in Schmidt.

I like your optimism. I am not breathing the air in the Enchanted Mountains so I am more of a realist. We live in a selfish world. The $$$ rules and the ideals we may have grown up with are not that prevalent today. The Cinderella stories we enjoyed in college sports will become memories for our generation to relish. I believe our new recruiting focus will help Bonas to field the best team possible. There will eventually be a realignment in major college sports. After that who knows whether we will even want a $2M coach. A lot of things are going to change. This is just my take.

I get a kick from the narrative that Bonas should spend all the money on NIL for the players and not pay the coach. Lets just get a bunch of good players that are going to come to Bonas for one year and let them coach themselves.

Art, Reread what I said. We aren’t throwing big money around for players. If the program becomes a revolving door every year do we need a high priced coach.

And good coaches in college basketball are well compensated. Our new GM just called Schmidt one of the best college coaches in the country. I agree with him.

The whole collegiate sports scene including coaching salaries, athlete salaries and the Professionalization of college sports could use a reboot Yes Schmidt is a good coach; yes he revived bona hoops . Do the Hurley brothers warrant the salaries they are paid…Should any of them be paid more than the governors of their states….. How much are the faculty members paid?

It is interesting that you bring the Hurley brothers up. State school UConn is projecting a $70 million deficit for the 2025 fiscal year. $70 million!!! Also true is the three highest paid CT state employees are the men's basketball coach, the women's basketball coach and the football coach. The AD makes $1 million. And UConn just signed Danny Hurley to a 6 year $50 million contract. $8.3 million annually. But, the Uconn men's basketball team reported a $3.3 million deficit in fiscal year 2023, the women's team a $6 million deficit and the football team a $14 million deficit. Over $23 million in losses for the three teams coached by the three highest paid employees in the state of CT. Make it make sense. I sure can't. How long can that possibly go on?

NIL is a totally corrupt system designed to do one specific thing - destroy all mid major programs in detail, and leave D1 athletics in the hands of the Power 5 schools and their huge media contracts (so they, unlike the mid majors, can pay their athletes salaries and NIL kickbacks).
By the way scholarship athletes already are receiving generous benefits - free tuition, free room and board, and monthly stipends for living expenses. These benefits amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars over a four year college career.
Bonas is trying very hard, but will NEVER be able to match the billions of dollars pouring into the coffers of the Power 5 NIL programs.
And to add insult to injury, all D1 schools, including Bonas will have to pony up settlement funds for the federal court settlement regarding athletes salaries, Bonas share is over one million dollars. That is complete BS.
As it stands now D1 athletics are dying a rapid death from greedy athletes and agents and Power 5 AD's. None of my cash will going to the NIL thank you very much.

Did you expect the new GM to say anything different? Weak argument. Anyway. We do not have the funding to play the NIL game. I have different view on the current state of college athletics. I expect that interest in college sports for mid majors will begin to drop. How many people on this site can name the starting 5 for Bonas this season?

There is no starting 5. What are you even talking about? People are excited about the program, we even come here to talk about it, go figure
