Olean’s population has dropped from the mid 20’s to around 8,000 today; the county population has dropped as well. It doesn’t appear that many in the community think”consultants”. Can have much to offer. The roads, traffic circles, and walkable Olean concepts do not seem to have had any results The former retail area is stocked with law offices. There are few people on the street’s.

Olean’s population has dropped from the mid 20’s to around 8,000 today I have seen ridiculous posts on the Bandwagon, but this one takes the cake. All you have to do is a google search for Olean’s population. Olean’s latest population from several websites is 13,650. It lost a total of 46 people from the previous year. Some other items from google search. Olean ranks high in the following. — Low cost of living. — Low crime rate. — Above average education. — Top places to raise a family. — Low risk for natural disasters. (Hurricanes in Florida, forest fires in California, extreme heat in the south and west and etc.). By the way, global warming has made winters very mild in Olean. We do not receive the heavy snow storms experienced by Buffalo. Days of the Rust Belt is over. From Buffalo News “Buffalo's population is growing for the first time in 70 years, according to the 2020 census.” Like Buffalo, Olean has slowly rebounded from the Rust Belt Era. Factories are being replaced by the service industry. There have been several new construction for the service industry in Olean with food, health, housing and etc. In the last decade, Olean has made significant improvements in making itself a vibrant and attractive small city. www.biggestuscities.com/city/olean-new-york

Small, poor , rural communities are in a tough spot. The start-up scene tends to lag big time relative to larger metropolitan areas. This is where transaction economic development can fill the void if you have economic development folks who aren't afraid to work the phones. Cheap industrial/commercial real estate can attract interest.
In the small Vermont town I live in, there has quite a bit of remote workers who came to the area post covid. A $500K real estate budget can go a long way in small towns

The figure 8000 is incorrect and around 13000:seems more accurate. The long decline in population is correct…a decline that has continued for decades.

The Olean-Allegany area is a wonderful place to live, with many advantages, especially if you enjoy the outdoors! Lower taxes, lower crime rates, good Catholic schools, great community vibes, highly trained work force.
Unfortunately due to very bad national de-industrialization policies from the 1980's onward the region has lost some major employers who paid very good wages and benefits too.
Dresser Rand/Siemens and Ontario Knife and Olean Tile, come to mind, and are not the only examples. With multiple plants in the southern tier, they provided thousands of good paying jobs to the region. These jobs are now gone, and have not been replaced.
The region has excellent transportation links with I86 and Southern Tier RR providing good service to industry. Now what we need is a national government dedicated to restoring manufacturing jobs in the USA, not China or the EU......get the job done, and quickly too.

The future isn't manufacturing jobs. The future is connectivity. I concur that Olean is a wonderful place to live and to raise a family. In today's remote office environment you have people that can live and work from anywhere, Olean could be very attractive. But you gotta have more/better options than Spectrum for example...
IMO city/county leadership should be invest in mobile infrastructure instead of crying about spilled milk... aka manufacturing.

More socialist vision.....we dont need manufacturing in this country. The Willie Clinton's vision for America....soundly rejected by the American voters.
Totally wrong! Who will produce the coke, steel, iron, autos, glass, rubber tires, concrete, coal, iron ore, petroleum, and uranium for our nation?
Does Olean have a future in manufacturing ? Yes, if we can get national leadership that returns jobs to America from China, India and EU. America First not last.
Olean has excellent transporation links via I86 and the Southern Tier RR.

Keep crying about jobs that left 30 years ago though and maybe the trump fairy will leave you a dollar under your pillow The topic of this thread is the future of Olean not the past of Olean

Didn’t Trump recently get his Bibles printed in China for $3 and is selling them in our country for $60? With Trump’s proposed 200% tariff I wonder how much more that would cost the American consumer? Asking fpr a few of my friends.

You must mean Joseph Robinette Biden who renounced all major tenets of the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church? That Joe Biden who backs the murder of unborn human beings until the moment of birth. He has been excommunicated latea sententae.....WTH have you been sparky?

If that mark-up is going to be bad, what do you think his $100,000 watches will go up to? Oh gee I forgot that DJT had the best national economy since WWII, with record low unemployment, especially in minority communities, most job growth, most investment, high tariffs on trade violators like China, India and the EU (who were stealing American and yes, Olean jobs too), and no foreign wars. Contrast that with Kamyhoe Harris, the wine swilling, anti Catholic, moronic robot of the Obama/Holder/Soros group which gave us record high inflation, high interest rates and involvement in not one but two foreign wars, costing US taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.
