Bolanga should get some slack. Yeah he played pro ball in France, but that was his home. He may be older than a typical freshman, but he’s still young and may need some time to adjust to living away from home for the first time. Even in your early twenties, that can take some getting used to. So IMO it is asking a lot to expect him to both move to a new country (where few speak his native language) and get used to effectively playing in a new, complicated system. He just may need more time to get comfortable with everything so he can play at his best. We’ve heard indirectly that the staff believes he is talented - let’s be patient and see if that talent will start to show soon (the start of league play would be a great time to start, or tomorrow!) We expect so much from freshmen that I think some don’t appreciate that just moving someplace new is a huge challenge for someone at that age. It’s part of why freshmen were ineligible until the ‘70s.

Any info on the struggles of Bolanga to get going offensively? I liked when Schmidt put him in the middle of the zone offense . With USU playing zone maybe he can get going with a couple of turnaround 12 footers and jump start his season.

Bang inside a little bit rather than just floating around the 3 point line. Knock down a 12 footer or two which will set up the pump fake and drive or High Low to Noel and/or a baseline cutter. The kid just needs a spark to get going. Of course - A little inspired D and a transition bucket would be the best way for him to get in Mark's rotation. On that NOTE - was MELVIN awesome on D (and O) last game or what ? He had the RC on its feet. That type of effort is contagious - the entire team and crowd fed off it !!!

They will be such a challenge, especially right after playing Utah St. as they are almost direct opposites with rugged defense and slow pace That would really prepare this team for A10 play to face these two teams back to back

Noah is not ready yet for D1 hoops and/or the Bona system. He was a role player (6 ppg, 2 reb, 1 asst) on a decent team in the B division of the French league. That is not even close to the talent level of the G League. He has a lot to learn.
I like his talent, length and athleticism — great upside — but let’s get our best players on the court now. Schmidt is trimming the rotation because the competition level is ramping up and he loves to win.
Hinton has been a stud off the bench and Thompson is hot and cold. I think Jaxon is the key piece to be added. I like his game.
I’m confident that Noah will find a role sometime this year or maybe in Orlando. He comes off the bench firing and missing shots, he better be a defensive stud or you know Schmidt will sit him down.

Like every year, us posters imagine the incoming club being one of the deepest in recent years just for the opposite to be painfully clear before the calendar turns to December.
Aside from Hinton, we have yet to get consistent scoring output from our bench. That's a bit concerning, no? I really hope Noah and Duane can turn it on before A10 play because if they don't, I'm extremely nervous for how we will fare in A10 play.
Rose seems to be a non-factor, Kaba is redshirting, Wedlow is raw and is a last-resort option off the bench, & Folarin is just a backup big with limited scoring upside.
So it looks like we only have three legitimate options off the bench. Hinton, Thompson and maybe Jaxon. Edwards is quite puzzling because he put up decent numbers at Valpo and seems like a great athlete, but he already seems relegated to our 9th or 10th man.
Like BigCat said, it seems a little worrying that Schmidt is this tight with his rotation at just six games in and something will have to change if we expect to compete in the A10 this year. Seems like Jaxon is the one guy that most would like to see play more given his numbers in the Missouri Valley last year.

We don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. Schmidt gives PT to guys who are proving themselves in practice. If a player is struggling with the O or D system they won’t play until ready.
Do we need a lot of scoring off the bench? We have 4 to 6 players in double figures each night. Hinton only got 14 minutes vs Bryant. That was a surprise.
IMO we need great defense and rebounding because Council, Moore and Bowen are always on the floor. When we play better teams the bench needs to hold the lead or keep the game close.
Jaxson seems to be well rounded player. He averaged 7 points and 5 boards in 24 mpg off the bench at Valpo.

Not ready YET… and might be needed in Orlando. yes, the league Noah played in was comparable to mid major basketball. Also, he didn't really dominate in that league. He's having a hard time b/c you can't really play him over ledge, Melvin, chance etc. I really think barry Evans would have had a hard time getting minutes this year. I like barry's game but I really dont' think he gets the same miinutes that he gets at bryant.
