Big development--Wedlow as backup big. Look good tonight but who knows--but big plus in that he has an offensive game where teams can leave Folarin alone, as we saw last night. May not see Noah again for awhile. Need Edwards back if they are going to press this much. Is Edwards hurt? He hasn't played in the last few games. Bolonga seems uncoachable at this point. He has no feel at all for game situations and is terrible defensively. I hope Miles Rose isn't going to be buried because that kid seems like he has skills.

After 25 percent of schedule played, some observations: Schmidt has assembled a cohesive, athletic roster much different than last season. Three point shooting appears suspect but Bona can overcome by playing up tempo. 1-2-2 zone trap overwhelmed NIU and if utilized earlier maybe could have affected outcome vs Utah State. Will see how much Schmidt uses this defense against A-10 guards. Hope Bona doesn’t force feed Brown in low post with double teams leading to turnovers like last year with Venning. Hope Schmidt cuts down on hedging with Brown, as well. Bowen and Moore are showing their pedigree after being recruited by power conferences. Bowen is a savvy point guard who can finish at the hoop. Moore looks great in the open court. Council is extremely quick, plays hard and has a nice mid range game. Jones is physical. Team needs to get him more involved on offense. Hinton appears to be good sixth man with a good handle and good range. Thompson has size but needs to stay home on defense and work on foul shooting. Edward’s would be an asset in pressing defense. When game is put away, wish Schmidt would empty bench in final minutes to boost team morale.

Interesting quotes from Schmidt. Chance Moore (four steals) spearheaded the trap from the top of the court. Schmidt cited defensive aggressiveness as a “big factor” in the win. “They have like one ball handler,” he said of UNI, in explaining the 1-2-2 move. “The other guys were bigger guys and more three-men than two-men and we just thought that would be something ... you never know but just scouting we thought that maybe it would work and our guys were effective. “Having Chance up top and being active and being long. It's difficult, our fours and fives have to play that pass up the sideline, but I thought we did a good job and then as the half went along we stopped trapping, we were just trying to slow it down, take time off the clock and I thought our guys really executed well.” www.oleantimesherald.com/newsletter/bonnies-council-heat-up-before-halftime-beat-uni/article_581c73aa-aee6-11ef-bb46-6ba2cafb61ce.htmlThis 1-2-2 soft press wasn’t anything like VCU’s “havoc press” but it was very effective and it changed the game. It created turnovers (turned into points) but I thought another important factor was it burned time bringing the ball up court, which reduced time for UNI’s half court offense. The 1-2-2 sped the game up, which benefited the athletic Bonnies. It’ll be interesting to see if Schmidt uses the 1-2-2 again. Anything that speeds up the game is going to be an advantage for this athletic team. My MVP of the game was Dasonte. Again displays his talent for taking the ball to the basket and to have just 1 turnover in such a hectic game is very impressive. Defense and athleticism describes this team.

Council was named to all-tourney team, though imho I thought Bowen was Bona's best player.

Nice bounce back win. The turn around in this game was turning up the defensive pressure in the backcourt. Our defense fed into our offensive flow. We outscored UNI 51-30 in the last 26 minutes of game time. Great job.

OSB - I agree. I Rewatched this game late last night. If we can play the kind of defense we played starting around midway through the first half until the end, we’ll be fine going forward. Man, our guys had their hands in every passing lane and in everyone’s face, generally defending without fouling while being crazy, “hair-on-fire” active. It was easier to see that watching the replay without the emotion and nervousness of watching live. The starters in particular have bought into Schmidt’s system. Other than just a couple lapses, they were all over the place, which created many fast break opportunities. In addition to the turnovers, UNI had virtually no flow to their offense for the entire second half. They only stayed in the game in the first half because they hit several desperation threes, often as the shot clock was expiring. And if Bowen continues to with this style of play, he will be a Bandwagon favorite among Point Guards. So far, his control of the pace of play of the offense has been outstanding. obviously in league play opponents are going to try and speed him up but I am counting on on his confidence and experience to be able to keep things under control. He better because I haven’t seen anyone else on the roster who can replace him running the offense as of yet.

Does Bowen have 1 or 2 years of eligibility after this year?

Does Bowen have 1 or 2 years of eligibility after this year? Bowen played two full seasons at Iowa. True junior; one season left after this.
