Fox,
I don't know whether this is Olean/Allegany urban legend or factual but Grif lived in a rundown old home on the street where the Italian Restaraunt was right across from Bonas main gate (Antonio's Villa or something like that?) and he had donated some large chunks of land (quite possibly some of the land where "The Old Course") is to SBU.
In exchange for his generosity he was afforded carte blanche at the Bona dining hall and the cafe by the bookstore.
He was an icon on campus in the late 60's and the 70's.
I believe he tragically froze to death during a prolonged cold snap in the early 80's in his home.

francis "griff" griffin did indeed live on the old cranberry road..as you turned in from old rte 17 [in front of sbu] griff's abode was the first on the left. the first home on the right belonged to malcolm"tim" wallace...sbu prof and one of the most wonderful profs ever at sbu. griff's house was most certainly in need of massive repairs..he was on campus all the time and always had a pleasant word for all.

Griff was there when I was in the late 50's early 60's. He was a fixture on campus and always had a kind word for all. I saw him many times hauling brush in his horse drawn wagon. He took it upon himself to keep things looking nice. A real nice guy and friend to all.

Please see my post of the other day about Griff. Griff was simply one of the dearest individuals to ever be associated with St. Bonaventure University. He was a maintenance employee for years and remained a fixture on-campus after he retired. He was a terrific friend to all of the students. He was a saintly-sort of man who I firmly believe exemplified a true Franciscan spirit. While their stations in life were astronomically different, Griff and Professor Malcolm Wallace shared the same humble faith. I feel enriched and blessed to have known them both.

Griff was a wonderful Bona character. As a kid I remember going on a horse drawn carriage ride around campus he drove with a bunch of us kids. He did live on Cranberry Rd in a run down old house which I understand had no electricity. I also remember he was a regular at 8am mass at Litttle Bona's when i was an altar boy there in the 70's. He died in the late 70's - I remember his funeral mass at little Bona's. Always a nice guy.
