that was a great team. Hayes was the ultimate garbage man always there for the weak side rebound.

John had a problem with his knees as you can see in the picture. Did he play 4 years or loose time because of his knees ? If you watched him he was very talented under the basket with assorted spins and such to score. Wasn't he from Niagara Falls ?

Is that the Big Cat flipping off the photographer with his left hand a la Larry Czonka on the infamous SI cover? This was the team that was undefeated in the regular season, I believe.

John Hayes update. John is happily re-married and living in Niagara Falls NY and working in chemical sales. I have crossed paths with my classmate on a few occasions and i also have the opportnity to see his wife on occasion as wellas she works at the office of one of my clients. they have three boys and life is good for them right now. i feel John may have been one of our all time greats had it not been for that nail sticking up from the floor of the the old Butler gym during practice. He tripped over that nail, tore his knee up and was never the same after that. As a freshman--when there was still a freshman team due to NCAA rules--he was virtually unstoppable. he averaged over 35 PPG and no one could cover him. he had every move in the book around the basket and feared nothing or no one. his injury was just the precursor of the bad luck of that era that culminated in the injury to Bob Lanier in 70 NCAA that cost us the championship.

When you talk about injuries, I also think back to another illness, called TB, which hit Tom Stith and Freddie Crawford in 1961. They may have been the best team in the nation, at one point they were 21-1, with the only loss being in the Holiday Festival in NY, and that loss was to the #1 Ohio State team (Havlicek, Jerry Lucas, Larry Seigfried, Bobby Knight), we lost 84-82. That was the game where they held Stith to 7 points in the 1st half and 28 in the 2nd.....he was unstoppable, triple teaming him didn't work.
Eventually they were ranked 3rd in the nation, with a scheduled game against Bradley (2nd in the nation) at MSG. We won 75-61 (maybe 63).......we didn't deserve #2, we proved that we were best. We won a few more in a row, then the effects of TB started to effect them.....and they never were the same (at 21-1, they lost to Niagara, then Duquesne, were trailing at halftime vs Canisius before making a comeback). What could have been?
