THE RECRUITING NOTEBOOK
By Dan Petronella Editor
Date: Jul 14, 2005
Dan Petronella rolls out the ever-popular Recruiting Notebook... just in time to take a look at some of Providence College's prospects and targets in the recruiting class of 2006.
Here now is the Recruiting Notebook for 2006.....
ROBERT GARRISON
Robert Garrison is another fully qualified senior who has crossed the Friars radar. Roberts is a 6-2, 170 pound combo guard from Niagara Falls High School who is currently planning to attend Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH in an attempt to raise his stock and play at a higher level. He is curious to see how his recruiting picture would shake out with an extra year to fine tune his game. Garrison is already getting looks from UConn, Georgia Tech, URI, Duquesne and Richmond. Roberts said "Providence, they're showing me a whole lot of interest. Pretty much a lot of the Atlantic 10 schools have offered me. Duquesne has offered, Richmond has offered me for this season, and Rhode Island is on the verge. Dayton, they want me for the fall." A very good student, Garrison is considering some Ivies.... Columbia, Yale, and Harvard are among them.
MALCOLM GRANT
Malcolm Grant is a 6', 175 pound senior guard from Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, New York who says he is considering Seton Hall, Florida State, Fordham, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Syracuse and Providence College. He also has received feelers from UConn, and Pittsburgh. With no offers in hand, Malcolm is also seriously considering transferring to a prep school for the fall and reclassifying. Grant said "I'm really just thinking about prep school right now and get a little bigger physically." If he does that, Malcolm will become a member of the Class of 2007.
RUEBEN GUILLANDEAUX
Rueben Guillandeaux is a 6-5, 180 pound wing guard from St. Patrick's High School who blew up this past weekend at the Eastern Invitational.Rueben was a 21-40 All Star at the camp and hit for 27 points in the semi final round. A rangy guard, with good ball skills, Rueben has a scorers mentality and nice stroke. He is hearing from Providence College, Rutgers, Vermont, Marquette, St. Bonaventure, LaSalle, Florida, Florida State, and St. Joseph's. Guillandeaux says he is wide open and will finish July with the NY Panthers at the Reebok Summer Classic East, and Las Vegas.
TERRANCE GRIER
Terrance Grier is a 5-11, 190 pound point guard from Cranford, New Jersey who the Friars have been looking at for about a year.... Terrance will attend St. Thomas More in Oakdale, CT this coming season in hopes of boosting interest in his talents. Grier finished high school with offers from Rutgers, St. Bonaventure, and East Carolina... He now adds Providence College, Auburn, URI, George Mason, James Madison, and South Florida to his list. Terrance is an athletic guard who can explode off the dribble to blow by a defender.... He has been shooting 300 jumpshots a day to improve that aspect of his game.He will play at the Playazz Ball at Seton Hall later this week, and will be in Las Vegas later in the month..... It is my belief that Terrance is qualified to play in 2005 if he so desires.
KASHIF PRATT
Kashif Praatt is a 6-3, 170 pound senior shooting guard from Rice High School in New York City who just completed a weekend at the Eastern Invitational camp as "an ever-present nuisance." Defensively, he pestered opponents racking up a plethora of tips and deflections, caused problems in transition, and well, he just wreaked havoc. Kashif can also hit the clutch shot when needed, averaging double figures at the tournament. Thus far, he has offers from Pitt, West Virginia, Marist, and Fordham.... He is also getting attention from LaSalle, Rider, and Providence College.... Pratt says that he is happy to be getting a scholarship to attend college..... "It's a great thing, a person coming from a bad neighborhood being able to get a good education and go to school for free. Some guys think it's about basketball, but it's not. I'm looking to start my own business. That's why I'm interested in a business administration major." Refreshing.....!
LAMONTE ULMER
Lamonte Ulmer is a 6-6, 190 pound senior guard from Hamden High School in Hamden, CT who just claimed the MVP trophy from the second session of the Eastern Invitational this past week. Lamonte dominated the Top 20 All Star game with a double/double, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Ulmer can hit from the perimeter and take the ball to the rim and finish. Lamonte averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds per game for Hamden this past season, and was a 1st team All State Class LL selection. Later this month, Ulmer will accompany the Connecticut select AAU team to Las Vegas for the Big Time Tournament. A diamond in the rough, Lamonte told sources that he is hearing from Providence College, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and East Carolina..... but that will change once July comes to an end.
STEFAN WELSH
Stefan Welsh is a 6-3, 180 pound shooting guard from Newport News, Virginia who will be attending Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA next season. Rivals has the young man ranked #111 in their top 150. As a sophomore, Stefan played big time minutes with the Boo Williams traveling squad.... At this point he was more of a driver than a shooter. The following season, he led his team to a third place finish at the AAU National Championships in Orlando. He is a confident player who was much more of a shooting guard than a lead guard entering his junior year. The strengths of his game are his scoring ability, strong body and toughness. He'll mix it up and get it done. His current list includes Florida, who has offered, UConn, Notre Dame, Xavier and Providence College.
JONATHAN MANDELDOVE
Jonathan Mandeldove is a 7', 245 pound center who played his high school ball at Shiloh High School in Snellville, GA. The big Georgian, who has a four out of five star rating by Scout will attend Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA for a post grad year. As a senior, Jonathan signed with Virginia Commonwealth but did not qualify. This summer his game has blown up and his confidence is soaring. Madeldove was quoted as saying that a return to VCU was "unlikely." Jonathan has all the tools to be a strong high major player.... Good runner and transitions the floor well... Needs to refine his low post moves, but improvement is not far away.... Mandeldove can be counted on to block shots and rebound... His offensive game is slow to develop but he's showing promise. The League is in his future.... He should be one of the top post grad players in the country this coming season. His current list includes Clemson, Miami (FL), Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Auburn, Georgia, Memphis, North Carolina, and Providence College.
JUSTIN BURRELL
Justin Burrell is a 6-7, 220 pound, rising senior power forward from Our Savior Lutheran HS in the Bronx, who is beginning to blow up as the summer begins. He has already received four offers.... Fordham, St. John's, St. Francis, and Drexel have extended an invitation to this young man. Justin, who averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks per game this past season for Our Savior, can now add interest from URI, Richmond, Providence College, Rutgers, Villanova, South Florida, Texas El Paso, Marist, and Delaware. Burrell is a player who lives under the offensive basket..... Along the baseline and underneath the basket, he can be a dangerous force..... He reacts well on the offensive glass, where he uses quick pogo hops to finish plays above the rim. Justin will play at the ABCD Camp next month, and will play the AAU circuit with the Long Island Lightning, where he has been a key player this spring. The Friar staff is very impressed and is trying to get him up here for an unofficial visit. Justin will make his first stab at the SAT in October, so no official visits are possible until the fall. Thus far he has made unofficials to St. John's and Fordham.
TRAVIS GEORGE
Travis George is a 6-9, 230 pound junior big forward from Roxbury, MA, who is currently playing for Bill Barton at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, MA. The Boston native, ranked #149 by Rivals and #93 by Hoopmasters, is the type of athletic specimen that high majors love to have roaming the lane. His natural skills include athleticism and coordination.... He is currently being tracked by Boston College, Georgetown, UMass, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, URI, St. John's, Virginia Tech, and Providence College.
JASON LOVE
Ranked at #77 by Hoopmasters, Jason Love is a 6-8 1/2, 250 pound junior big forward from Abington Friends School in Abington, PA who is getting interest from the Friars, just about all the Philadelphia schools, Penn State, Duquesne, Charlotte, Rutgers, and Georgetown. My friend in Philadelphia said "Big Jay Love is one of my favorites for thee Claass of 2006. He has girth amd knows how to use it. When he puts a body on you, he's almost impossible to move. He has mastered the art of sealing and the defensive rebound. He recently had 38 rebounds in a three game tournament. When he puts his massive backside on his man, he becomes paralyzed. There's much need for a kid like Love, and schools in the A-10 and Big East should take notice."
LAWRENCE WILLIAMS
Lawrence Williams is a 6-6, 235 pound power forward from Paramus Catholic High School in New Jersey. A senior, Lawrence is planning to spend a year at Milford Academy for a prep year, trying to raise his visability. Williams is very active around the hoop, using his strength to bully his way around the interior. Providence has shown some interest in the ruggedly built insider, and will monitor the New Jersey youngster during his prep season. Lawrence reminds a lot of people of his coach, former NBA standout, Tony Campbell.
JACOB GREEN
Jacob Green is a 6-8, 195 pound junior forward from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, who was one of the most watched underclassmen in the country during the evaluation period last summer. According to his coach, Jacob was seen by Clemson, Duquesne, Florida State, Fordham, Georgetown, Loyola, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Providence, St. Bonaventure, Syracuse, Charlotte, Villanova, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. He was at Maryland's Midnight Madness last fall, and has also paid a visit to Wake Forest. His coach commented that Jacob has the ability to change shots.... He's a good rebounder and a great passer. He's a very skilled four, he continued.... For his size, he's a great athlete. He just gets up and down the floor.... has a nice face up jumper and can play at the elbows.... He's also very good with his back to the basket.
HILLARY HAILEY
Hillary "Pop" Hailey is a 6-7, 195 pound junior wing forward from the Friendly School in Fort Washington, MD. A member of the DC Blue Devils this summer, Hailey is a superior athlete who runs the floor extremely well. A solid inside/outside scoring threat with incredible length, Hailey blocks shots, hits open teammates and scores consistently. Pop averaged 18.2 points, 11.3 rebounds, and three assists per game this past year for Friendly. He is being looked at by George Mason, Georgetown, Louisville, Penn State, Providence, St. Bonaventure, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
AUSTIN WALLACE
Austin Wallace is a 6-8, 210 pound junior big forward from LaSalle Academy in the Bronx. Austin is being checked out by area schools, such as Rutgers, Fordham, and St. John's, plus he has received interest from Georgetown, Georgia Tech, South Florida, Delaware and Providence recently. Wallace is a 6-8 big forward who impacts the game with excellent shot blocking and rebounding skills, while adding in an emerging offensive game. A member of the NY Gauchos, Wallace said that "Providence comes to all of my games". South Florida calls all the time and Delaware is also high on his list.
TYRONE NASH
Tyrone Nash is a 6-6. 205 pound junior power forward from Lawrence-Woodmere Academy in Woodmere, NY who has pieced together a solid junior season. The Queens native is a 3.8 student, and is drawing heavy Ivy League interest, mainly from the likes of Columbia and Penn...... But he is also getting feelers from a wide range of programs, including St. John's, Providence, St. Bonaventure, Hofstra, and Virginia. A talented young man, Nash has outstanding passing ability out of the post..... The lefty is a competent ball handler, a savvy player capable of playing the point adequately when needed, and he is a diligent rebounder who isn't afraid to mix it up down low. He has good footwork and a strong pair of hands. It remains to be seen how consistently he shoots the ball. He averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists this season. A well known alum of Lawrence-Woodmere is former Providence center, Karim Shabazz.
WILL HARRIS... Verbal to Connecticut
Will Harris, the 6-6, 220 pound small forward from the Corona neighborhood of Queens, NY, will attend Brewster Academy in New Hampshire this coming season after receiving a LOI release from the University of Nebraska. Harris, who started his high school career at Christ the King, eventually detoured to Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, NY, and then to Maine Central Institute. Will, who will turn 19 in August, has put up some gaudy numbers in the IS8 League in Queens this spring, going off for 47 points in one game and 51 points in another... Recently he hit for 33 with the help of Providence recruit, Geoff McDermott who joined the team. Since his release, he has received interest from Arizona State, Providence, Seton Hall, Virginia, DePaul, and Rutgers. He is well known to the Providence staff. The Friars recruited Harris for over a year, up to his signing with Nebraska. A blurb on this young man appeared in the old 2005 RN.
XAVIER CRAWFORD
Xavier Crawford is a 6-10, 220 pounder who is ranked as the fourteenth best center in the junior class. Currently playing for the prestigious Mt. Zion Christian Academy in North Carolina, Crawford hails from Richfield, Minnesota. The long center is a strong defender with a nose for the ball. The reclassified big man needs to add bulk... he is 20 to 30 from where he should be, but his raw potential is there to make him a solid high-major talent. He is an athletic shot blocker whose defensive game is ahead of his offense. When asked for a school list, he mentioned that Duke, Michigan, Bradley, and Providence have been giving the most attention.
TYLER ROCHE..... Verbal to Boston College
Tyler Roche is a 6-7, 195 pound small forward from Manchester Central HS in Hooksett, New Hampshire whose team captured the state title...he was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in The Granite State.... and most recently led his AAU team to an upset victory over powerhouse BABC. Roche averaged 26 points and eight rebounds a game for Manchester this past season, and knocked down the go-ahead jumper in the state title game with 1:30 left. Known for shooting the three, Tyler is also a good passer, and is working on becoming more aggressive in taking the ball to the basket. Over the past month, Roche has received calls from Georgetown, NC State, Boston College, St. Bonaventure, and Holy Cross.
DENNIS HORNER
Dennis Horner is a 6-7, 190 pound combo forward from Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, New Jersey who is receiving attention from a number of high major programs, including NC State, West Virginia, LaSalle, Providence, St. Joe's, Villanova, Wake Forest, Monmouth, and Rider. He is a long, smooth athlete who can shoot from the perimeter and make plays off the dribble He needs strength to really be effective in either the Big East or the ACC. Dennis emerged onto the scene in the spring of his junior year. He raised eyebrows at the DC Festival and Charlie Weber tournaments. Excellent shooter, prefers structure. Savvy player and a good passer. At this point, NC State and West Virginia appear to be in the lead for his services.
COREY LOWE......verbal to Providence College
This young man, who some say was the best player in Massachusetts this past season, is a true point guard who can shoot the lights out from the perimeter.Corey has flown under the radar because of the notoriety received by teammate, Anthony Gurley...... But Corey averaged 19 points and five assists per game, teaming with Gurley to lead Newton North to its first state title. Lowe, also a football player, will add toughness to the Friars. The 6-1, 175 guard can run a team.... and that may be the biggest strength that he will bring to this program. He chose Providence over Boston College, Stanford, DePaul, NC State, Syracuse, Northeastern, Boston University, Virginia and Binghamton.
ANTHONY GURLEY.... Verbal to Wake Forest
Corey Lowe's backcourt partner at Newton North is a 6-3 shooting guard who is quick and elusive. He gets to the rim well and uses his body control to finish. He also shoots it accurately from downtown, and is also able to score from mid-range as well. Providence has recruited Gurley for a number of years now, but it looks more and more like he will end up at either Boston College or NC State.
JOE MAZZULLA...... Verbal to West Virginia
Many Friars were hoping for a commitment from this Johnston native..... Joey is a 6' , 165 lb point guard who played for Bishop Hendricken and, in my opinion, he wanted very much to be a Friar. He has the ability to penetrate, get to the rim... pass off to the open man, or finish himself. People who have seen him play say that his shooting from the perimeter is suspect. He has been offered by a number of major programs, including West Virginia and URI... with Syracuse showing major interest. There are reports that he will attend a prep school next season, and if that happens, Joey may yet be a Friar..... Nothing would please me more.
JEROME DYSON
Jerome Dyson is a 6-3 1/2 inch, 180 pound combo guard from Proctor Academy in New Hampshire who appears to be "able to score just about anytime he wants to," says Proctor coach Gregor Makechnie. "He's a great shooter and has three-point range that is effortless." A native of Potomac, Maryland, Dyson played for Winston Churchill High and received little notoriety until he arrived at Proctor..... maybe the fact that he is only 17 played a role in that. He is reaching maturity and Coach Makechnie believes he will end up as a top 50 player in his class. Beside the Friars, Dyson is being recruited by Maryland, Georgetown, UNLV, Villanova, UConn, Notre Dame, Purdue, Florida and Georgia. LANCE THOMAS
Lance Thomas is a 6-8 195 pound, highly rated small forward from St. Benedict's High School in Fenwood, NJ who is being pursued by the top programs in the country. Thomas is ranked at the 7th best small forward and 21st best player in America. On the last weekend in April, at The Kingwood Classic in Houston, Thomas averaged a double-double, despite he pressure of constant double teams. In one game he had 31 points and 15 rebounds against SoCal AAU team. Coaches reported to be watching Thomas were from Arizona, Duke, North Carolina, Villanova, Kansas and Providence.
DAN WERNER... committed to N.C. State
Dan Werner is a 6-7 combo forward from Seton Hall Prep in New Jersey who has attracted plenty of interest from high major schools this past season. The skilled, versatile forward with a nice stroke and a good understanding of the game is hearing from St. Joseph's, St. John's, Richmond, North Carolina State, Providence, Rutgers, and West Virginia.
DANNERO THOMAS
Dannero Thomas is a 6-5, 190 pound wing guard from New Orleans, Louisiana who recently led the New Orleans Jazz to a 67-60 victory over the NY Ravens in an AAU game in Houston. Dannero is a don't leave me open shooter who poured in 18 points in the victory. Thomas said that he is hearing from Illinois, Providence College, DePaul and Purdue.
CHRIS DONALD
Chris Donald is a 6-4, 180 pound shooting guard from Catholic Memorial High School in Roxburry, MA who is receiving interest from Dayton, DePaul, Providence College, Boston College, URI, and South Florida. This young man, one of the top juniors in the state, can flat out score.Averaging 25 points and eight rebounds this season, Donald is long, gets to the basket and thrives in transition. Chris is looking for a Boston College offer.
DAYE KABA
Daye Kaba is a 6-4, 190 pound combo guard from Our Savior New American in Centereach, NY, who has earned quite a buzz from a bevy of high major programs. A native of France, Kaba came to America last summer, averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds, and seven assists in his first season of New York style basketball. Schools that have shown interest include Pittsburgh, Villanova, Boston College, Miami, Arizona State, Texas A & M, Rutgers, St. John's, Rutgers, and Providence.
FRANKLIN JONES
Franklin Jones is a 6-11, 275 pound center currently playing for Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Jones previously played at Niagara Falls High School in New York, and was a teammate of Friar forward, Jeff Parmer. Jones is a big man who possesses plenty of strength.... he could help clog up the middle defensively for many high major programs. He is being monitored by UConn, Pittsburgh, Providence, South Florida, and St. John's. Franklin has had academic problems and is a prospect for a junior college.
