This team is going to be signifigantly better than last year's woeful bunch, in my view. First-hand observations from students, local long standing Bona-watchers (JAC, Tiger Flynn, etc,), and young players' development (Lee, Relph, Hawkins), convince me of this... optimism springs eternal in the Enchanted Mts.! My opening starters: G- Relph G- Smith C- Williams F- Lee F- Lottin BRING ON THE NAYSAYERS!!

I agree 100%. There have been a great number of basketball minds that I deeply respect from Bonas and the surrounding area that have very nice things to say about this year's team. It's great to have an upgraded frontcourt with Williams, Fox, and Ivan the Destroyer, but the key is our hugely improved backcourt. It was our inability to handle pressure and distribute the ball from the point position that hurt us the most last season, in my opinion. Peaches Relph and Terron Diggs are going to be a great one-two combo at the point, and I expect to see them on the floor at the same time a great deal this year. In the A-10 guard play wins, and we've put ourselves in position to be successful in that regard. There is most definitely reason for optimism at Bona's ol' Saint Bona's!

Think what you want but I'm not trying to stir the pot, rather I'm being realistic. Do you think you are really going out on a limb by saying this team could be "significantly better" than last year? They won 2 games last year, can't see how things could get much worse. That and the fact the schedule has gotten much easier.
*DIFFERENT* non-conference games between the schedules: Last year: Iona (15-16) MAAC Syracuse (27-7) Big East Cornell (13-14) Ivy Ark. L.R. (18-10) Sun Belt George Mason (16-13) Colonial N. Illinios (11-17) MAC Alcorn State (7-22) SWAC
This year: Robert Morris (14-15) Northeast St. Francis-PA (15-13) Northeast C. Conn. St. (12-16) Northeast Youngstown St. (5-23) Horizon Toledo (16-13) MAC Florida Int'l (13-17) Sun Belt TX-San Ant. (15-13) Southland or Cal St-Fullerton (21-11) Big West
Is this a trial run to see how we would do in the Northeast Conf.?

Fro, you're (gulp) right. There is NO reason with this schedule that SBU could not go 8-3 in the OOC. Robert Morris, St. Francis, and Youngstown St. are just bad. Niagara should be down from last year (no saying it's a win, but...). Marist, CC State, FIU are middle of the pack in their respective conferences, which are not very good conferences. Toledo lost it's best player (Tripplet). WVU, I still feel did it with mirrors (or a REALLY REALLY good coach!). UTSA is playing with 8 new faces and Cal State- Fullerton has something like 18 players on shcolarship...check out their roster if you get a chance... Now that Solomon has cut his teeth, he must prove that he can win (IMHO). There are alot of wins on this schedule with the improved roster.

Fro: ...don't believe I said I was "going out on a limb". Gotta pretty much agree with your astute assessment. Besides, if I perchance DID go "out on a limb", it better be a pretty damn huge tree!

When you consider WV or anyone in the Big East's conference schedule I think it more than evens out. Lets keep things in perspective here.

If you're in the big east and you went as far as WV last year - not to mention that they have almost all their players returning, then you should be able to hold your own against the teams in your conference and not be playing Baltimore-Maryland County or whoever. My perspective is .... give SBU a chance - instead of always finding the negative.

Not to try to turn this into a conversation about WV, but you obviously didn't look at their schedule very closely. Non-conf. games with LSU, Oklahoma, and UCLA. Also, the 1st two games are part of the Guardian's Classic, which if they win their first two games then more than likely they will face Texas and if they survive that then they would face another top notch program. You people forget that SBU won 2 games last year. Other schools view us as the same as the Louisana-Monroe's of the world right now. www.gazellegroup.com/guardians/bracket05.pdfBefore last season WV was not a powerhouse in the Big East. The Big East is tough enough, why not play a few easy games to get your bench players some quality minutes so they don't have to do all of the learning during crunch time. The Big East is absolutely loaded and a few extra wins could be the difference come selection time, no matter who they come against. The Big East will have teams that could easily contend for the A-10 title, yet they will struggle to stay above .500
