Lansing Catholic forward commits to St. Bonaventure
By Geoff Kimmerly
Lansing State Journal
Lansing Catholic senior Andrea Doneth had little idea where St. Bonaventure was located when she received her first recruiting letter from the school.
And she didn't realize it belonged to the Atlantic 10 Conference until she saw the other schools' banners hanging in the Bonnies' gymnasium.
But her visit to the school's campus in southwest New York a few weeks ago held one more surprise. It reminded her of home - and fit where she wanted to spend the next four years of her basketball career.
Doneth has verbally committed to the Bonnies, becoming the first of another strong area basketball class to pick her school.
"It's a smaller school, and that's what I'm used to. I wanted a smaller school but I didn't want to limit myself to Division II," Doneth said. "I loved that it was a Catholic school because, once again, I'm used to that. I met with the coach, and I met with the team and something just felt good."
The 5-foot-11 Doneth is arguably the area's top player after making the Class B all-state first team the past two seasons. Doneth, a small forward who has played all five positions during her three-year varsity career, averaged 14.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in 2004.
Oakland and Coastal Carolina also offered scholarships, and Doneth was interested in Marquette. It appeared Michigan State might be an option, especially with her sister, Danielle, walking on and earning a scholarship last season. But Dan Doneth, the girls' father and high school coach, said MSU's scholarships for next season already have been accepted. Utica guard Mandy Piechowski verbally committed about a year ago, and 6-8 Grandville center Alyssa DeHaan gave the Spartans another verbal commitment earlier this month.
"At first I wanted to wait and see if anything else came up, but this summer most college coaches saw me, and if they're not interested now they're not going to be interested later," Andrea Doneth said.
The Atlantic 10 sent three teams - George Washington, Richmond and Temple - to the NCAA Tournament last season. St. Bonaventure finished 9-19 last season.
But Doneth will bring some state tournament high school experience. Lansing Catholic has made the Class B semifinals each of the past two seasons.
"She's excited about it, but she wanted to get the decision behind her so she could focus on the season," Dan Doneth said.
