Thanks Frank.
I had the oportunity to speak at length with Steve Watson when he was in AZ in March. He took time out from the coaching search to fly to PHX to met with Bob and Sam Stith and spend the evening at a local fund raiser the both of them were running. He is the reason that former players are getting involved and he will be a great asset to SBU.
That said, it's really a shame that these playerswere not even called during the tenure of the last two coaches.
Things are indeed starting to turn around.

Keep up the great work, Mr. Watson.
What a well written article by Vinny.
It's great to see Bob so excited about being involved with Bona again.

I was under the impression Sol did try to reach out. Not a bash against the former AD, but I think Watson has done a tremendous job so far.

This is why we always should "hire our own" because only those who have expereienced SBU & the surrounding community understand the nuances (like reaching out to a Lanier) that someone like a Gothard Lane or Ron Zwerlein could never be expected to understand....- those guys had to be briefed on the history of SBU and its accomplishments - Steve Watson lived it - as a kid he attended games in the RC during the NIT championship years - he understands it very very well....and also understands that a guy klike Schmidt would work well here - and can bring a Schmid up to speed real quick about what SBU is all about.... "our own" includes all those who either grew up in the surrounding area or attended SBU or worked at SBU....

Points out that sometimes there is a value to hiring people and recruiting people athletically and otherwise who have emotional ties and historical roots with the area and the college. Hiring professional vagrants who are just looking for their their next job or to pad their retirement doesn't always advance the cause.

From the article...
When Watson came to Lanier with the idea of the court naming, Lanier hesitated.
The idea was Sam Molinaro's, the alum who donated much of the money toward the new floor. Lanier had to speak with Molinaro before anything.
"When I talked to (Molinaro) I was lifted," Lanier said. "He said that his family had gotten together and wanted do something special for the school. They collectively said they wanted to do it in Bob Lanier's honor, because who better, they said epitomized the Franciscan spirit in the way he's played and lived."
But Lanier also made this point to Molinaro: "I'm accepting this on behalf of all of us that shed blood, sweat and tears in the Bonaventure tradition."
And that tradition is still deeply rooted in Lanier. His days at Bona will never leave him.
"I am a spirit of St. Bonaventure University," he said. "It was four of the best years of my life that I'll never forget, in an environment where people really truly cared about who I was, and not just a number or not just somebody who came in and played basketball.
