No, we wouldn't be the ones under a lawsuit. If anything, the University would sue the Buffalo News for reporting his name which is illegal. Students all received a notice from Sister Margret Carney outlining the situation earlier in which she stated:
"St. Bonaventure University will continue to defend and uphold the highest standards of academic integrity against unfounded rumors such as these. The University will use all reasonable and legal means to aggressively protect the good name and reputation of its administration, faculty, and students."
I believe that under The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) it is illegal to release the student in question's name (don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure).
In every email Sister Margret sent out and even in the BV, the student was referred to as "the student in question." Neither even made so much as a suggestion of gender or sport of the athlete in question. Why the Buffalo News chose to print the name is beyond me.

I suppose it depends on how the Buffalo News acquired the information because whoever(if they are a University employee) provided the information to the Buffalo News(and the article is unclear on this point) violated federal law(FERPA) in doing so.

even if someone could prove the info came from the school (and the News will fight like hell to not give up the source), they'd have to show that the person doing so was acting in the course and scope of employment - the admin has been all over this in setting the exact opposite policy.
