Let's withhold pending judgement or assumptions until substantial facts are released and both sides can be considered.

Boy, these Allegany Police officers are unbelievable. They nab Ahmad Smith for "disorderly conduct", yet the UPS gunman remains at large. I can see that we have our priorities straight. Try taking care of real problems instead of hunting down college students to pad the APD budget. Christ.

More off-court trouble for the Bonnies By VINNY PEZZIMENTI, The Times Herald 10/03/2005
A St. Bonaventure men’s basketball player was arrested in the village of Allegany early Sunday morning, according to village police.
Senior guard Ahmad Smith was one of five individuals charged with disorderly conduct following an altercation involving 15-to-20 people in front of The Other Place bar on Main Street.
Disorderly conduct involves fighting and refusal to disperse from the scene when asked.
Two village officers on foot observed the initial stages of the altercation at approximately 2 a.m. As the altercation escalated, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department and Olean Police Department were called in to assist.
Kern Carter, a former Bona player, was also involved and charged with disorderly conduct. Carter, a junior from Toronto, had his career cut short after two seasons due to a chronic groin injury.
Smith, 21, from Alexandra, Va., is scheduled to appear in village court Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
St. Bonaventure sports information director Steve Mest said Sunday that the university is in the process of gathering information and will review the matter internally.
Smith, an All-Atlantic 10 selection, led the Bonnies in scoring, rebounding, assists and minutes played as a junior. He was among the top 10 in the A-10 in several statistical categories last season.
Smith’s arrest follows a summer in which Bona guard Tyler Relph was suspended indefinitely by the school for a drunken driving arrest in April. Consequently, Relph, who was found guilty of driving while ability impaired in August, was suspended for this season’s opener against Robert Morris at the Reilly Center on Nov. 18.

Okay, 5 people arrested and we only get to see 2 names in the paper. Guess this is what they call "professional" journalism? Where are the names of the other 3 individuals? I'm just surprised that he didn't mention "Jamil Terrell, blah-blah-blah" again!

Disorderly conduct and "refusing to diperse"...
Don't blame the cops! I wonder about some of our "character guys" on this team!
Instead of "Marching Forward", some of these guys are just plain "Marching to their own Tune"!

I don't get it. A player and a former player from our university's basketball team are involved in a fight outside a bar, are arrested, and people are unhappy with the cops and the journalist? I, personally, am unhappy with these students. Pissed, frankly. As was stated not long ago on this board concerning the Princeton review findings, this never-ending bad publicity is really taking its toll on SBU. Enough already.

I don't mean to downplay this issue by any means, but "disorderly conduct" according to the Allegany Police is merely being within 20 feet of a fight. Let's wait to hear the details before we start jumping off a bridge and complaining about how "i'm so tired of getting bad press". Ahmad will have to pay 250 dollars regardless, he'll be on his merry way and we'll all forget about it.

Is there no curfew for players ? Maybe there should be ! What are they doing out at a bar at 2:00 AM anyway, when they have practice at 6:00 AM (maybe they have Sunday off) ? Surprised this incident wasn't covered up like all the others in recent months. Including the fight between some JCC players and some Bona players back in May over a Bona player's girlfriend that resulted in a minor stabbing (scissors from a bookbag). A couple of veteran police officials, one from Allegany, one from Olean, said they are fed up with the problems they constantly have with players from both teams. One analogy they gave "there is nothing but a bunch of thugs on both teams !" Our fine young men

What do you mean "what are they doing at a bar at 2:00 AM"? They are 20-23 year old college students. Have you ever been 20-23? At Bonas, I used to have to get up at 5:30 for physical training and you could still find me at the OP around 2. When you're that age that isn't such a big deal as long as you don't do it every day. As for the Allegany mall security, er, police, who knows what happened. Police can charge you with disorderly conduct and failure to dispurse for just about anything. They weren't charged with assault, so they probably weren't the principals in the fight. The players need to watch it, though. We are going to get killed in our first couple of games with no players on the court.

Correct, there's no reason men's basketball players can't socialize after hours just as 95 percent of Bona students are on a Saturday night. What these young men must realize, however, is that if they engage in late-night activities they are doing so with huge targets on their chests. The toy cops at the APD want to arrest an Ahmad Smith more so than the average Bona student, which is already a lot. Every last one of them wants to be the one to say he took in Mr. Smith and add a Bona ballplayer to his resume. Five arrests - all disorderly conducts - does not alone mean everyone was doing the same thing. Disorderly conduct is a very vague term that could be used to describe a number of activities. Let's not hear the word "fight" and jump to conclusions.

Before I begin my diatribe let me say everyone is innocent until proven guilty! That includes VBK, Wickie Dickie, Tom Delay, Bill Clinton or any athlete or entertainer. Also, I don't think the APD are looking for Bona basketball players to get in trouble. It is unfair of you to compare the incident at UPS with the Bona incident. Actually, I am stunned someone would make such a comment. How inconsiderate. Get a lilfe! Wny police risks their lives every day they are working.
Unfortunately this may be yet another black-eye involving a Bonas sports team. Mainly we have the basketball players getting in trouble or is it a case of the marquee players who get their incidents publicized? All I know is any athlete is held in higher esteem. This is probably more so for the basketball team.
Maybe its time the Bona athletic department put together a committee to discuss scholar/athletes. One topic to discuss in attracting high character players. We need good, positive ambassadors of our athletes to our community. I am sorry but serving dinner at th Pulaski Club or washing cars just doesn't do it! Coach Solomon it is time you get tough with your players. Believe the community is getting sick and tired of the players antics.

A couple of veteran police officials, one from Allegany, one from Olean, said they are fed up with the problems they constantly have with players from both teams. One analogy they gave "there is nothing but a bunch of thugs on both teams !" Our fine young men This is an unfair generalization to make and it is scary to know that men in uniform hold this kind of opinion. The basketball team features a few outstanding individuals who are genuinely good kids, including Michael Lee, Tyler Benson, and Wade Dunston to name a few... Not only this, but the opinions of "veteran Olean/A-town police officials" go as far as a dollar at the gas pumps. Facts from ANY Olean/A-town police officials will tell you that several, if not dozens of 'Disorderly Conduct' cases are issued on a typical weekend, ranging from excessive Bills chants out in front of Mangia's, to urinating behind of Mangia's, to the most severe: "insubordination".

Well put, Friar. Times seem to be a lot different now. In the past, players had respect for their elders and for authority figures. Now it seems they all have a chip on their shoulder and walk around with a holier-than-thou attitude because they are "star athletes".
Workers at Bona have said this team is a far cry from past teams in the respect that they will pass you in the hall and won't even return a greeting. Used to be a guy like a Prato or a VanPaassen would stop and talk and socialize, these players now just ignore you and you get the impression they do not want to lower themselves to talk to a mere mortal.
Either that or the music in their headphones is too loud.
And it's not just on campus either. Take a drive down West State Street some time, and see what they're like there. Most cars move along at a steady clip, 35 MPH (posted limit is 30) but Bona students want to turn it into their own West Olean Expressway.
Many is the time I have had a carload of students fly by me doing at least 45, zipping back and forth between lanes, and then for good measure, giving the finger to me or anyone that happens to be in their way and slows them up by a second or two.
Or they will park in handicapped spots or fire lanes to go shopping at one of the local establishments, blocking traffic and they don't give a crap. It seems the younger they are, the lazier they are. Can't be inconvenienced by walking ALL the way from a regular parking spot - and they certainly don't care about that senior citizen with a walker whose spot they just took.
I realize that we are probably only talking about a handful of students that are the "bad-eggs", but they give a black eye to all the students. Don't parents teach their kids respect and manners anymore ?
