Friar, my comment about the point system was sarcasm. Recently another thread come under scrutiny because the sarcasm used wasn't obvious to everyone. I apologize if the same happened with my remarks. The Olean/Allegany area has a distorted view on the basketball players. Clearly SBU basketball is a huge part of the community, but those who experienced the succesful teams of the 70s still view the current players in the same legendary light.
Being in college is about learning inside and outside the classroom. Drinking is part of the college atmosphere and will never be eliminated. One major difference between the two eras is the drinking age is 21. Students (including athletes) now go off campus to party.
Which is how this administration has failed the university on a consistent basis. The grade changing and alcohol related crimes have resulted in minimal punishment. This reminds me of the lack of involvement from above during the welding incident. Obviously the admin didn't learn their lesson then and they refuse to get involved now. What are they waiting for! They have yet to understand the relationship between the students and the community. Factor in that the highest profile students (basketball players) are now involved in the trouble, why does the admin remain on the sidelines? Relph got a slap on the wrist for his SECOND alcohol related incident in a few months. For those who think the local authorites are out to get the basketball players, just remember Relph bought his way out of the higher charges. He has privately admitted (and laughed) he was drunk. Luckily nobody was hurt but things could have been much worse, but I guess that is what the admin is waiting for. Maybe then they will take a tougher stand but unfortunately, by then it could be too late.
