When I graduated Bonas in '02 as a J/MC major, I swore that one day my path would lead me back to SBU to uncover a scandal. A scandal involving the very people who are supposedly there to 'protect and serve.' The only thing they should be protecting and serving is ice cream.
Since my dreams of becoming a journalist ended about 10 months after graduation (SBU failed to mention how difficult it is for a white male to break into to the industry and make more than $3.50/hr.), I figured I should pull the wool off of your eyes and let you know what the fine Allegany Police Department really does.
On several occasions I had friends who were essentially blackmailed by our brave police heroes. In one stunning instance, three out of eight housemates came home at 1am to a trashed house, a partied out shell of a dwelling of which they had no knowledge and nothing to do with. The APD came by a few minutes later to investigate the scene because a drunk underclassmen blew that house in for serving the alcohol.
After cooperating fully with police, these three young men were offered an ultimatum: either accompany the police to the ATM next the sub shop and take out $200 each or be arrested with the caveat 'that the police will refer to their "lack of cooperation and resisting arrest" when their court date came. Irregardless of their innocence or guilt, they went to the ATM and paid the cops a total of $600.
I heard this exact same story about three weeks later from a young lady who was caught walking down the main drag with an open container. It was ATM or resisting arrest, simple as that.
There are undoubtedly dozens of other victims of this despicable act you will never hear about.
The APD has absolutely no credibility whatsoever and these charges are probably BS. Now Ahmad has to get his name dragged through the mud in the newspapers and on forums and campus media for 'failing to disburse'? It makes a flashy story since Bonas has been the butt of a lot of jokes lately.
On second thought, maybe paying that bribe isn't such a bad option.

Irregardless? No wonder you had a short career as a journalist.

Obviously a remark like that was coming. I'm sure my editor would have caught it, so I guess that makes you my editor. What's your email Fro so I can run all my posts by you for a spelling and grammar check?

That maybe the funniest story I have ever heard. As a current Bona student, I felt the need to tell you all what really happened Saturday. A large group was gathered outside of the OP. A large brawl followed. Most of the basketball team was there. They were cause of the problem. The Allegany Police cut them all a break and let them off easy. This isn't the first or last time they have dragged the rest of the SBU student body down with them. They make us all look like trouble makers. I love SBU athletics, but many of the players social actions are disgraceful. Oh, and as for our "team leader" Ahmad Smith? He was trying to take swings at police officers. Nice.

That's the other side of the coin but doesn't give the APD any more credibility at all. In fact, that blatantly shows the differential treatment the basketball team, and to a lesser extent, most athletes at college get.
Think about it....small town, nothing going for it, big time college basketball program, they look the other way. I'm surprised as anyone Relph was arrested. Makes me think he was probably blowing lines off a hookers' *** while driving on the sidewalk at 95mph.
Let me ask you 'current Bona student', think you would have gotten a slap on the hand if you had been 'taking swings at police' ?? I think you'd have been entering your PIN into the ATM if your *** wasn't in jail that night.

The fact is some of the cops are good and reasonable people but I agree with espo. I am sick of cops charging students money to not be arrested. It happens and it needs to stop. As for the fight, this is the most blown out of proportion thing it isn't like Ahmad stabbed someone. Stupid fight, life goes on. Let this thing pass

Not to rain on your parade fellow alumni but perhaps you missed out on a lot of things at SBU. Such as learning about moral and ethics. When I went to Bonas philosophy and theology taught me about myself, integrity, morality and ethics. By the way they also taught me that I am not perfect but to learn from mistakes.
If what you described is true have the integrity to report this incident to the Cattaraugus County district attorney to investigate. If this is true they should be removed from the police force. No questions asked! Period, end of story!!!
Bonas is no different from any other university. We have our fair share of problems and issues like the rest. Any student, regardless if they play sports or not, should be arrested for any wrong doing.
With regard to SBU not telling you what future jounalists make perhaps you could have done some career planning on your own. It seems like you do a good job of pinning the blame on everyone else but you. Maybe you should return to graduate school and major in the "school of hard knocks."

Friar, relax man. I was just joking around about the career part.
And to your first point, I would love to go to the DA about this, except it didn't happen to me. I don't know how seriously they would take a claim from someone who just 'heard' about it happening, even though I know (and it seems to have been confirmed with another post) that it happens.

Espo...yours was a sorry, sorry post. Out of SBU three years and you're still blaming others for your sorry lot in life: first it's SBU's fault you're flipping burgers somplace because they didn't tell you that "white males" can't make more than $3.50 an hour in journalism. Aside from your remark being implicitly racist, tell Eric Brady of USA Today or Mike Vacarro w/ the Post or the 3 SBU Pulitzer Prize winners or countless other Bona alum that an SBU journalism major can't crack minimum wage out in the real world.....hey but you use words that dont exist like irregardless. Do you blame SBU when you wet your bed because they never told you to strap on a depends at nighty night? Re the Allegany Police and your yesteryear allegations:blah/blah/blah/blah/blah Power to the people right on/down with the pigs. Make Bonas proud and disappear.

I find it kind of odd that these "bribes" have not been investigated. I think it's time we lay off the police departments, they're doing their jobs. When a spoiled brat gets arrested it has to be some kind of harrassment right? Please! Give me a break! It's funny that every time something happens to one of our coveted players we bash everyone else involved. The TRUTH is that they're out there actually doing these stupid acts and getting caught. Quit questioning the integrity of the police, reporters, etc... and start questioning the integrity of the players and spoiled brats!

OL2- First of all, as I stated in an earlier reply I was kidding about the 'white male' comment. If anything, I'm the least racist person (or at least tied for that title) on this forum. I've seen people referring to our basketball players as 'thugs' and even assuming those players are guilty of going around campus raping, stealing, murdering innocent SBU students and the schools reputation. While I agree there has been far too much going on off the court, I'm not going to say these players are the root of Bonas PR nightmares. In fact, I think its every 'spoiled brat' that has pissed on some Allegany residents' lawn, or woke the whole neighborhood at 4am yelling like a drunken idiot. These are the things that have made the residents of Olean and Allegany dislike the students, therefore putting the pressure on the APD to settle things down. Only when its a basketball player involved, some hack at the Times Herald has to run a big story about them. Regular students don't generate enough interest so they get mentioned in an article buried in the back of the paper.
These bribes haven't been investigated because no one has spoken up, thats why. And when most students are faced with either paying a cop $200 and keeping things quiet, or risking a larger fine/charges and getting their parents involved, etc., they choose the former. And without a group of these blackmail victims stepping forward, no one would ever be taken seriously.
And at least I post under my real name, whether my facts and opinions are controversial or not. I don't hide behind some blanket of anonymity with a BS handle.
Next time read through the whole thread before coming at me with your lame takes. In fact, you're probably APD and are starting to sweat a bit. The secrets out fuckers

Well, If you lived in the Olean area from 1998-2002, then you would know I did the play-by-play for the womens basketball team. So if you paid any attention to them, and judging by the attendance you haven't, then you may know the name espo. If not, then my full name is Chris Esposito, class of 2002
