CAPE COD, Mass. (October 5, 2005) -- Commissioner of the ECAC Phil Buttafuoco has named Gothard Lane as the director of championships. Lane comes to the ECAC with more than 23 years of athletic administration experience.
Lane served as the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at St. Bonaventure University from 1999-2003. His contributions included developmental and marketing advances, increasing the women’s sports scholarship program, and various renovations and construction projects that improved the athletics’ program for the Bonnies. The graduation rate at St. Bonaventure, during his tenure, ranked fifth in the nation at 87 percent.
Prior to St. Bonaventure, Lane worked at the University of Maryland, College Park as a member of the athletics administration where he acted as the Director of Varsity Sports and the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Services. During his 17-year tenure with the Terps, Lane oversaw 11 NCAA Championship events on campus and supervised athletic programs which won a total of 10 national championships. His internal responsibilities included strategic planning, budgets, personnel, compliance and facilities while externally being heavily involved in marketing, fundraising and coordination of special projects.
Most recently, Lane was the President of ICA Consulting in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. He advised intercollegiate athletic departments with internal organizational reviews, strategic planning, NCAA compliance audits, and the development of departmental policies and procedures.
Lane began his athletic career as a coach. He was the assistant football coach at University of Maryland, Tulane University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
“Gothard joins the staff with vast championships experience. I am excited about his ability to assist our staff and membership in the successful management of the championships program,” said Buttafuoco.
Lane is a 1971 graduate of Randolph Macon College, where he earned is Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.
In his role as Director of Championships, Lane will manage all aspects of championship administration, assist in developing short and long range strategies to enhance the championships program, work with host institutions, designated sports committees and the membership to manage the championships program and represent the conference on external speaking platforms, committees and organizations.
