Here’s hoping there will be a huge turnout to loudly welcome our Bona Legends tomorrow evening. The number of returning players from Bona’s golden age of basketball is impressive. There presence should help to remind current students & players of the great players that came to their small school in the Enchanted Mountains & were responsible for Bona being nationally recognized as a formidable team. 99 straight wins is still the second longest win streak in college basketball & may never be exceeded again.
Last January Tom Stith & Glenn Hagen sat in the Rose Hill gym & painfully watched the Rams beat the Bonnies by 6. Tom watched passively as he saw the Ram’s Dunston have his way inside. He showed no emotion but watching him I could only guess what he was thinking. In his day, as talented as Dunston is, Tom would have made him disappear & have taken him to school. Tom scored 30 pts against Jerry Lucas & John Havlicek & Dunston is not quite at that level. Tom’s quiet and humble demeanor is quite different from many of today’s stars. As an All American one can only speculate what pro career awaited him if not for TB. I also spoke with Glenn at that game & if you have not seen him since his playing days you will be impressed that he has changed little. I bet he could still fit into his old brown & white.
Lets hope that the RC crowd shows their appreciation of our legends and makes as much noise as possible. A rabid Bona crowd will help our legends bring back memories of how things used to be & hopefully instill in our current players & students pride in the Brown & White.
