The Bonnie coaches were selected by Friars until De Carli who was chosen by a committee that didnt have a clue on choosing a coach. Then Donovan chose Chapman after he was turned down by many including Hurley from Jersey City
Fr Silas Rooney chose Ed Milkovic from Pittsburgh and Duquesne. No doubt he had some input From Dan Rooney, his brother, and the owner of the Steelers. Milky, as he was called, built the program and Bonnies dropped football. Ted Marchibroda, our quarter back, was drafted and played for Steelers and went on to a coaching career in the NFL. Donavan went to the pros with the NY Knicks while another grad led the Philadelphia Phillies to the World Championship. Guess who? He was from Salamanca. In 46 thru 50 Ken Murray led the Bonnies offensively. He was a guard who could also play the low post and Milky designed an offensive where guards had to play the lowpost as did Sassone and Kenville in the future. Sam Urzetta was the 1 guard and he led the nation in foul shooting 2 years in a row. He capped that by beating a millionares son, Frank Stranahan, for the National Amateur Championship in June 1950
In 51 and 52 the Bonnies went to the NIT 2 years. They beat Cincinnati in a triple overtime with Sassone scoring 18 to lead the team. Then they beat Western Kentucky and lost to St Johns with Zeke Zawoulok and Al Mc Guire by 60-58 in the Final Four. Bonnies was up by 14 and the Redmen went into a press and John Nucotola and Howard Bollerman, 2 New York Garden Homers let the bonnies be beat up physically and they lost.
Onlookers outside the locker room heard a lot profanity from and he was restrained by Fr Malcom Fischer.
In 52 the Bonnies were in the Final Four again with Dayton and lost out again, and beat Duquesne 49-31 for 3rd place. Earlier in the year SBU lost to the dukes 69-63 in Pittsburgh. The Dukes went to the NCAA which was an afterthought at that time. SBU was rated 3rd and 4th in the nation during the year.
To be continued if warranted.
