Maybe I should have used Pete Van Passen instead of Lanier as an example but you just hope you find a diamond in the rough and maybe one of these recruits is just that. Hope springs eternal !

I guess we'll just have to wait and see... James Williams from Cloud County (JC) KS has verbally committed to St. Bonaventure and this too is a huge catch. Not only are we talking about one of the best junior college 2-guards in the nation, but Williams is versatile enough to play the one, two, and three spots and is a terrific scorer, passer, and rebounder. In other words, the Bonnies have found the ideal replacement for 6'5 Sr Ahmad Smith and 6'4 Sr Wade Dunston, as well the perfect complement to 6'0 Soph Tyler Relph, who is expected to step in and run the show after transferring from West Virginia to St. Bonaventure a year ago. the above text is from hoopscoop. Hoopscoop also ranks him as a (6), by comparison, Andres Sandoval, Dayton is a (3), Hernol Hall, Duquesne is a (8), and Joe Mbang is a (6). FYI, James opens the season tonight at Cowley CC. I assume & hope that Mr Hawkins has a thing or 2 to say about who replaces ASmith in the backcourt next season! ---------------------- Tuesday, Nov. 1 Cloud County def Cowley College 73-68 no boxscore was posted on www.kjccc.org/basketball/bbindex.htmlas of yet!

Agreed, that PVP is a better example. I am a big fan of the underdog, diamond in the rough, over achiever. They are are so far and few, let's not stock our cupboards with maybees!
As Ron DeCarli used to always say..."You can't make chicken salad outa Chicken Sh*t" Used to love that one!

The recruits with potential(Kuba, Fox etc.) never seem to realize that potential. Williams will be a player!

I listened to Williams' game last night (Man, I need a life!!!) and honestly, it sounded like he struggled offensively in the first half. But stepped up big time in the second. Sounded like he played point most of the game and had the ball in his hands at the end of the game (needs to work on his FT shooting in the clutch. Unofficially, the announcers were horrible, I had James as 1-6 from the field, 0-1 3pt, and 1-3 FT in the first half, missing two lay-ups that rolled off the rim as he beat his player off the dribble. In the second half I had him 2-3 FG, 2-2 3pt, 4-6 FT. (including going 1-2 with 1:08 left and 1-2 with 0:39 left.) For the night 3-9FG, 2-3(3pt), 5-9 FT. 13pts-5rbs-6a-3t-2b-2s (he continued to drop the ball inside to Cassin Diggs (from Williamsport, PA) and led the break VERY well. The second block against Cowley's Julio Anthony earned him a "T" when he said something to Anthony. His team was down 1 after the 2 FT's 50-49 with 11:10 left and proceded to go on a 18-4 run (both his three's came in this run) to lead 67-54 with 3:14 left. Cloud returns home on Saturday at 9pm our time to complete the home-in-home with Cowley. Game will be on the net again and will also have live stats via the cloud website.

Thanks for the update JAC. I enjoy following the progress of our early signees. According to James opponent's website: James was tied as the 2nd leading scorer on his team with 11 points. He was 2 for 8 from the field (both shots were 3 pointers) and he was 5 for 9 from the line. Leading scorer for Cloud County was their 5'7" point guard Reed Hein with 14 points. Kuba is not a good example in proving your point about recruiting champions. With Jameer Nelson as a teammate, Kuba led Chester High to the Pennsylvania State Chmpionship. It is also interesting to note that Andy Smith led his team to the Number 1 ranking in North Carolina. Willie Morse led his team to the Pennsylvania State Championship as a Junior. Kern Carter teamed with Theo Davis to lead their school Henry Carr to a championship in Canada. Solomon has been following your advice of recruiting champions, but he has not had a lot of success with this strategy. I agree it is important, but it is only one factor you consider when deciding to recruit a player. As noted above, so far it has not been a good indicator for success with the Bonnies.

I think it is unfair to judge Solomon's recruiting skills based upon his first class (Kuba, Carter, Smith, etc.). Quite frankly, after the scandal that Bonas had just endured, I was surprised Solomon found anybody that was willing to wear the brown and white. If you look at his second recruiting class, he brought in one stud (Lee), a solid scorer (Dunston), one flop (Morse), and three guys we'll know more about as the season progresses (Relph, Williams and Carson). Too soon to tell on the third and fourth recruiting classes, but it appears we will have size and depth for years to come.

Completely agree that it would be unfair to judge Solomon's recruiting skills based on his first class. My reference to Kuba, Carter, Smith and Morse was in response to Mangham's statement of the importance in recruiting champions. I do find it strange that it was Solomon's first year when he signed his best recruiting class. Charles Burch was a top 125 recruit and Mario Boggans was a consensus top 50 recruit, one of the highest ranked players ever signed by the Bonnies. At the time Solomon was being praised as a great recruiter. Lets just hope Solomon has turned the corner and these recruits are equal to the praise JH, JAC, Mangham and others give to them.

Never said for sure who scored it. That would explain my extra 2. What I can believe is he had less then 2 assists. I wonder what they consider assists.

Sounds like he is an all around solid player who makes his teammates better players and puts them in position to do good things.
He's not afraid to do the dirty work and has an attitude.
He hits 3's in crunch time and his team pulls out a game on the road.
Sounds pretty positive so far......whether he comes to SBU and becomes the go to guy, a starter or in the rotation....time will tell.
It would be nice to hear of him dominating some games (especially offensively) during the course of his season.

Chuck, I don't want to get into a p+ssing contest over this but players that have led their teams to state titles are usually the kind of players that you want to sign! I can name a number of kids here in Ct. that UCONN passed on(harper williams, marcus camby) that would have excelled for them. It's not always the prototype player that the big schools want that matters. It's how the player uses the gifts he has. Ask WH, his monicker stands for Will Herndon, one of the most under recuited players ever. By the way I said led their team to a state title. Kuba, Carter and Morse were contributers but not leaders.
