Yep....until Rick Pitino "swooped" him up with the Kentucky Wildcat flying device and he never thought of Bona winters again! Instead, we got Caswell (also out of Canada) and the two were destined to meet in the NCAA tourney.

Yeah him and Cyrus were supposed to come together until Pitino swooped in and stole him from Bonaventure. It would have been a dominant front court PVP, Cyrus, Magloire.

Great thread. I think the best player were the Bonnies came in second was Johnny Newman. He was a big time recruit who was weary of going to a big time school, because of playing time and being recruited over. He saw it happen first hand (I think it was a relative). He chose Richmond and became a 2,000 point scorer and had a 17 year NBA career. I believe the abrupt change in coaching staff at Bonas was a deciding factor in Johnny choosing to stay closer to home. Initially he wanted to move away from home.

We were fighting it out with Xavier for Cas....ask the X fans on the A-10 board.

Can somebody remind me of the name of the big kid SBU was after out of Power Mem in NYC back in 69-70? SBU "spopnsered" a high school game with Walsh vs Power on a Sat. It was scheduled the day after Christmas recess was to begin and all the students stayed on camus because Bona was playing Dequense with 6'10" twins and Bona was going to have a big year (FF). Bona threaten to turn off the heat in the dorms to drive the kids out because they wanted the revenue from the high school kids. The student center was packed with people sitting 4 and 5 deep on the floor. During the Bona game, one of the twins pushed big bob and he turned around and just shook his finger at the guy adn there was no more of that during the game.

If my memory is correct it was Len Elmore (U. Maryland - great career), Ed Searcy ( went to a few schools, I believe St. Johns and Duquense - I believe he had a few problems ), Jap Trimble (not sure where he went) and I think one other big time player. They were an awesome HS team that blew out Walsh. That was one of the great nights in RC history as it was the first big test for the Final Four team which was followed up by a great run at MSG where we won the Holiday Festival by whipping Purdue (Rick Mount) in the Final and big Bob tied the record with "50" - Chaz - How's that for a memory !

777- Your memory is amazing considering I had to carry you into the RC that evening past the bouncers,Larry Ford,Herm, Stubby, the fire marshall and anyone else in charge for the Power Mem/Walsh game. You did some "Snow Shoes" with Furry & Cazoo and you were a mess. Was that peppermint schnapps and Crown?
