Dwight Clay , Notre Dame grad who hit the shot that snapped ucla 88 game streak would have been around 1970 and Toby Knight another great ND player was around 73. they would have been recruited by Digger Phelps right after he left Fordham and still had good NY connections.

riker would have been recruited during the 67-68 season i believe as it was his recruitment that landed the Bonnies on probation for my senior year. the probation season was the 1968-69 season, the one immediately preceding our Final Four season. We were done in by an overzealous alum or supporter if i'm not mistaken.

Armond Hill from bishop ford in brooklyn played at RC vs. walsh as a senior. he had verballed to SBU until a princeton alum offered to send him to prep school and then on to pete carill's tigers. Dwight Clay from 5th avenue high school in pittsburgh verballed to sbu..then digger swooped in and took him. tom riker went to st dominics of oyster bay on long island. he also verballed to sbu. he was a guest of ben rusin [who did much recruiting spade work for weise] at the ncaa regional when lanier went down. the game was at south carolina..they squealed to the ncaa and the rest is history..ironically, south carolinas coach, frank maguire was well known to nyc gamblers, in fact, that is why he was asked to "move" down to USC..it is well chronicalled in the jack molinas book. james brown was on campus along with sbu player carl jackson and his vicksburg miss teammate marshall sanders who ended up at harvard with JB. how about olden polynice, austin carr among other studs who visited but never made it to the enchanted mountains ??

I know Olden Polynice loved his visit to SBU...he was at our after-hours party in the garden apartments until 6:00 AM. When I asked him how he he liked SBU so far, he gave me a great big smile and said "this place is WILD". Too bad we didn't get him.

Cleve,
Your facts and Bonnie insight are almost always impeccable but I think you're getting the NCAA appearances mixed up.
Riker was at the NCAA games when we were 23-0 and then lost to UNC (I think) and then a consolation game too)
When I spoke to Bob during a friendly round of cow pasture pool before his induction into BHOF, he felt it was our old nemisis Jack Kraft Nova/URI that dropped the dime.
That meant that the Junior year for the Big Cat was the suspension year washout (17 or so wins) and thus his Senior year that he was felled in the Villinova game ECAC Regional.
There was a tale while I was at SBU that Roosevelt Bouie was a lock for SBU until a Caddy appeared in his driveway and Syracuse signed him up.

You used to walk into the dining hall and there would be recruits eating as i remember Dwight Clay was there...maybe it was 1970 or somewhere around that time. Remember when you could buy newspapers & mags there and when basketball season would roll around they always spot lighted articles that had us "pre-season rated" (ie: SI, Street & Smith etc) It was a exciting time to be there and I don't think most of us realized how lucky we were, in alot of ways, during that time.
Dem - you're right about the suspension year being the 68-69 season and we were 17-7. We started out with a 6-5 record and then proceeded 11-2 over the last 13 games with no tourney bid. We lost at DePaul in OT with some questionable calls...I think Don McLean said the officials name was Bud Lowell. Talk about trivia...I need a life!
We played South Carolina and Tom Riker in '72 and lost a close one. Ok,ok no more.....

Keep Goin', Don't Stop Chaz...Love that stuff!
Brings back some wonderful memories!
I believe Big Bob got ejected from what I think was the final game of that year (suspension year) against Creighton, for throwing a chair?!
Does that sound correct?

Bonadad07, I believe it was Ray "Dice" Martin who hit that shot that beat UCLA for ND. Martin went to St. Rita's grade school in Long Island City & Mater Christi HS in Queens. He was also an assistant caoch at NC State - not sure if under Valvano.

lanier was tossed right after the initial jump ball to start the game. a much smaller creighton player ran into bob and lanier just grabbed him in backhand fashion. much like a bear would swat a human..he backhanded him and then picked him up..very harmless, but amusing..right at center court.

I was at the game. The Creighton player kept bumping the Big Cat from behind like he was going to jump on his back. Finally, somewhat annoyed, Lanier gave the guy a back hand like he was shedding an unwanted insect, and the pesky defender slid across the court a good distance on the seat of his pants. It was rather comical.

az, Pretty sure it was Dwight "Ice Man" Clay who beat UCLA with the shot. When I was at ND, there was a huge picture of him taking the shot and it was on the wall in the Athletic Dept lobby. Ray Martin was a year or two behind him but a pretty good player who along with Donald Williams was on the teams with Adrian Dantley. Those were glory days for the Irish as well as the Bonnies. Hopefully both programs will improve this year

Swede, I was at the Garden Apts. the night Polynice was there. It was quite the night. I remember standing on a couch to speak eye to eye with him. Bonas had a student-assistant from NYC who made the connection for O'Brien. Olden was a relative unknown at the time from All Hallows HS in The Bronx. The next year (1983-84) he was playing in the Final Four for Virginia as a freshman along with Mike Sheehey's brother, Tom, who played at McQuaid in Rochester. We never had a shot with Tom Sheehey, but Polynice was real, real close. Again a bridesmaid. -- Visit the Heart.
