(November 3, 2005) — Canisius-bound Cory Magee's decision on where he would go on to play NCAA Division I college basketball came down to two schools.
Siena College offered a lot of things, in addition to an athletic scholarship. The team is on the local media's radar screen and plays its home games in Pepsi Arena. Magee, a senior at Fairport, played Amateur Athletic Union basketball last summer for the Albany City Rocks, so he has a number of acquaintances in that area.
"At times it seemed like the right choice," Magee, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound center/forward, said. "And one of my AAU teammates committed to Siena. I just got a feeling at Canisius. I felt so comfortable with coach (Mike) MacDonald, good with the guys.
"Some people are down on it because the campus is in an urban setting, but I really liked it there. I felt more comfortable."
Magee told MacDonald on Wednesday that he will accept a full scholarship from Canisius. The 2005 All-Greater Rochester forward plans to sign a binding letter of intent with the Golden Griffins when the early NCAA period for recruit commitments opens Nov. 9.
The State University of New York at Buffalo, Fairfield, James Madison, Coastal Carolina, Binghamton, Niagara and St. Bonaventure also offered scholarships, according to Magee. Former Livonia star guard Kevin Downey, a former co-AGR player of the year, is set to begin his senior season at Canisius.
"The whole process was enjoyable up until the last two weeks," Magee said, "back and forth. I finally went with my gut, and I think it's going to work out."
