In 1953 Ed Donovan ws hired as head coach. He was hired to replace Milkovich who had a 12/12 season in 52/53. It was his first poor year as a coach.
FR. Silas and Jack Ritzentaler the SID(one man department) were driving in Olean and their discusion led to Donovans hiring. He had been successful at OHS and won the sectionals in 1952. Ray Padlo the barber played on that team with Mike Shane and Jim Snyder.
Ritzenthaler suggested the hiring to silas. They gave him a 3 year contract and then a 1 year to make good. He did with an NIT appearance. Mc Cann,Wiese,Olshefski, Newhook and Conners were the starting team. They beat Seattle with Elgin Baylor and Mc Cann held him to 26 pts. They lost to Memphis State on a last 2nd shot by Win Wilfong. Mc Cann was the first draft pick by the Knicks and 6th overall in the NBA draft. Ned Irish saw Mc Cann as another Dick Mc Guire.
Sam Stith played for Sassone on the freshman team that year and Tom came a year later and Crawford followed with Whitey Martin.
Ned Irish liked Ed Donovan because of his success and choosing the NIT over the NCAA. They proceded to go to
the NIT in in 58,59, and 60. They beat St Johns 3 times in a row those years which was a huge accomplishment. Sam scored 38 pts in one game and they won 95 to 78.
St Johns never scheduled Bona after that.
Eddie had outrecruitd St Johns in NYC so they never wanted Bona to get exposure in the Garden.
The recruiters for Donovan were 2 FBI agents who graduated Bonas in 50 and 51. One was Donovans roomate Chris Scaturo ,a quarterback on the 1950 team and the other was Terry Mc Shane an end on the team.
Mc Shane later was appointed as overseer of the TEAMSTERS UNION in 56/57. Hoffa was replaced.
The Bonnies always used alumni in recruiting until Sassone was hired in 1968. More about that later.
Donovan signed with the Knicks as coach in 1961. Ned Irish groomed him to become the GM. He put together the Knick team which won the NBA Championship in 1970. Red Holzman who was Donovans assistant for 3 years worked closely with Donovan to lead the Knicks to 2 NBA titles.
.More later.
