*Long post alert*
Drove down 95 to spend a very enjoyable southern weekend with a Bonnie comeback victory, the best pulled pork sammich I've ever had and other perks of an underrated city with a great lady. What a game.
Quick recap: Bonnies got off to a good, fast start, played man and a 1-2-2 press against Richmond's Princeton-esque offense. Their cutting and our lack of commitment on D wore us down a bit and Richmond took a 3 point lead at break. Bonnies opened up the 2nd half in a 2-3 zone that slowed down the Spiders and caused them to go to their point series, which brings the post high. It was this move that allowed the Bonnies to get a 3 or 4 point lead and dominate the glass. We then went back to man and Richmond starting hitting 3's. as we don't close out well and are weak getting through screens. We went back to zone, got back in the game after being down 67-60 with 2:30 to play. At this point we had our jackets on and were standing in a portal. The 11-0 run to finish the game was magic, from Hall's drive, to the inbound defense on Richmond's last possessions. Amazing the grit and poise that was displayed. Especially sweet was how quickly is shut up the Richmond fans who were giddy from the halftime celebration of their 1AA football championship team and were slightly obnoxious to fans wearing SBU shirts like me in our little cheering section behind the bench.
Coaching observations: the offense is pretty basic, motion with guards and forward exchanging to set up dribble drive penetration or some kind of four around one look to get the ball inside. The most effective set for us was high-low in the second half with Nicholson and Thomas screening for each other, then Thomas posting with usually a size mismatch due to the screen. He sealed his man well and got to the line almost every time down the stretch. We were really looking to get it in the paint. Only problem with the offense is that is requires a certain amount of dribbling and passing skill level that some, notably Thomas, Mathews and Eleby, lack to certain degrees.
Defense was adequate at most times, lazy others and superb at the end on the inbounds plays. We are longer than I thought and the 2-3 was effective with Hall at the top Nicholson in the middle. What decided the end, however, was our ability to switch screens on the two Ricmond inbounds. Hall was awesome as a centerfielder. off the ball, picking up cutters.
Nicholson: huge upside, passes well, nice soft jump shot
Thomas: weak handle, gritty, posts well, runs the floor
Matthews: worst defender, streaky but has a good stroke, why is he the only guy with black shoes? Hate that
Eleby; managed game fairly well; showed youth by taking the ONLY charge of the game, then taking his only jumper which was a bad miss on the other end; likes uptempo
Hall: tough, suspect shooter, good on the ball defender, not so much off, lots of intangibles
Benson: Stiff. Enthusiastic on the bench though
Davenport: Maybe my favorite Bonnie. Long, can defend, gets down in a defensive stance unlike others, lefty. Has that pigeon toed walk of a player
Dude with the string through your stringy hair on the end of the bench: you look absurd and you don't cheer enough.
Finally, there was evidence of coaching everywhere, from inbound dunks from Nicholson, to a 1-2-2 token press to slow down Richmond, playing man against a Princeton O, then switching to zone, but back to man at crunch time(last possession and the afore-mentioned inbounds) to scowling at every timeout, coach is giving it all he has. He out-coached Mooney and rusty you are my least favorite poster, supplanting clubhouse, after your F Schmidt post. We are lucky to have him.
GO BONNIES!
