The high scoring Philly guard continues to post big numbers. From the Plil Daily News:
Calvin Newell scored 40 points, the final three coming at the buzzer in overtime, as Strath Haven topped Holy Ghost Prep, 68-67, in a District 1 Class AAA semifinal at Wissahickon.
Newell's 11 second-quarter points gave the Panthers a 37-17 lead at the half.
John Glenn's two free throws with 6.2 seconds left put Firebird fans in orbit, but Newell shot them down to earth shortly after that. Glenn finished with 15 points to lead the Firebirds.

I am not only stunned that this kid hasn't signed with us yet, but that he hasn't signed with anyone. Get the job done. It would be another great 4 year recruit.

Newell plays the point, but as a freshman he'd probably contribute more in a combo guard role. He's a little bit undersized as a two guard at 6'0", but that can be overcome in the college game. It seems that Newell can fill it up from anywhere, but there are some reservations with respect to the players against whom he competes. Strath Haven is not playing at a high level in the Philly area, but Newell's numbers are hard to ignore. Dino Pressley is recruiting him.

Calvin is not surrounded by much talent. He does it all for Strath Haven & is relied on to get the great bulk of their points. Situation doesn’t lend itself to great playmaking opportunities.

"No layup. No tie. I was going for the win." I love it. God I hope he is in the Brown and White next year. I know the talent level he is playing with and around isn't the best the Philly area has to offer but it sounds like he can put some points on the board. We could really use that kind of scoring threat from a guard.

Was this guy offered a scholarship? Do we have a verbal from him? He has yet to be offered, but the staff is interested. They've been on him for a long time now and have developed a great relationship with the young man. I hope he lands at Bona.
