Reasons to be thankful:
Jim Boeheim. His success as Syracuse University's basketball coach has made winters in western and central New York easier to bear for a long time. I'd be even more thankful if he'd agree to play one game every three years against St. Bonaventure in Rochester. I can't think of a single reason why that shouldn't be done.

I saw that too and it made me consider liking Bob Matthews. Then I realized he was doing a cliche and self-serving "What I'm Thankful For In Sports" article and quickly snapped to.

How about they actually man up and play at the RC?
They (sissied) out on a home and home in 1999-2000 because they knew we'd kick their... They haven't played at the RC since like, 1987, I believe.
It's hard to respect a team that plays 75% of their games at home and never challenge themselves OOC.

I would agree most years except this year they do play UNC, Cal, Florida, and Memphis add that to a Big East Schedule and it is a top 25 schedule I bet. Syracuse has nothing to gain by coming to the RC, and while I wish they would play us there, they have no reason to except if they decided to be nice in state neighbors, but otherwise most years it a lose lose situation for them to come to Bonaventure. |

I think we need to move on from Syracuse. Too many other programs that we can work something out with. Bonafan08, why should we be concerned with what benefit Syracuse gets from coming to Olean. They should be so worried about the state of their football program. Talk about a program in an extended decline, that is the poster child for D1 football. I say we schedule some ACC and SEC road games and get some national exposure if we are unable to get home and home games. An upset win on the road against a Tennessee, NC State or Florida could do something for our program. This obsession with Jim Boheim and the Orange is an upstate thing.

Let's put the SU thoughts in the rear view mirror. I wouldn't mind a scheduling model that Temple employed under John C. Play anyone anywhere. Builds strength of schedule, prepares the team for conference play and attracts recruits.

Remember games at UConn (twice), Boston College, Alabama, Oklahoma, Davidson and holiday tourney with Michigan, Va. Tech and BYU. Not a lot of gimmes. Wouldn't be opposed to it. Good for recruiting and exposure. Kids wanna play the best teams, especially those who are overlooked by them. |

I am no syracuse fan, from NJ, and don't have any obsession with Boeheim...actually thats a lie but only Mrrowdy would understand...
I do think that every two/three years we should play them even if it is always at the dome, just good for alumni, its a fun trip and a quality opponent that is not too far away.
As far as playing a temple schedule....yes up until a point but lets give it a year or so. We are still at the point of any win is a good win maybe after this year we can start complaining about quality wins. I think this years OOC schedule is perfect for what bona needs right now.

I'm totally for it, but we still need to get teams to come here for home games. As we see with Cuse and Mississippi State there can always be games to be found on the road for teams looking for a noncon tune-up. Unfortunately, there isn't the option for a come-one-come-all attitude with our home tilt, as seen with Savannah State and LeMoyne making their way to the RC midseason due to incredible struggles to fill the schedule. I don't mind neutral site games in Buffalo or Rochester, but if you take away too many Reilly Center games you cripple certain advantages that come from home cooking. |

I agree totally that we should move on from Syracuse. If they play us fine, if not, fine. Boheim will never leave the security of the Dome and has no immediate reason to.
I would love to see us try for series with teams like Providence, Seton Hall, Davidson, Drake, Butler, Creighton, Wichita State, Rutgers, Holy Cross, Depaul,Sienna. Many of these programs have similar issues for OCS scheduling.
Of course a home and home is preferable, but the Rochester and Buffalo venues are positive options to get value opponents back on our schedule.
With further success, it will certainly become more difficult.

That would work for our NON CONFERENCE SOS. But our total SOS is pretty much 100% dependent on the Atlantic 10's win pct in non-conference play. IF everyone in the A-10 plays and crushes cupcakes, our SOS will be higher than if we all go out and play the best teams in the nation OOC. Because we have 17 conference games (assuming on tourney game), and we have 12-14 non-conference games. |

Sorry, but I would hardly call Rochester a 'positive option' when we just held a game there and only drew 4,100 to an 11,000 or 12,000(?) seat areana.
Gotta beleieve we 'took a bath' financially on the St. John's game.

Take a look at NCAA Div 1 average attendance. I think you will find that 4,000 per game isn't that bad.

You are correct bjif, 4,000 pe rgame in an on-campus arena, that the school owns, is not bad.
However, when you are putting $80,000 to $100,000 up front to secure the rights to play in an arena like Blue Cross or HSBC, you need to draw more than 1/3 capacity in attendance.
