Graham Hays, a regular contributor to ESPN.com, interviewed coach Jim Crowley and senior forward Dana Mitchell for his story on the 10-0 Bonnies' three-year turnaround, from a 71-46 loss to Bowling Green on Dec. 10, 2006, to their 70-54 win over Bowling Green on Dec. 12, 2009. A good read ... (it's the lead story on the ESPN women's basketball page!) sports.espn.go.com/ncw/columns/story?columnist=hays_graham&id=4747058

Interestingly enough, this wasn't even the only Bona's related content on ESPN.com today. Bill Simmons also mentions the circumstances behind Tom Stith being selected 2nd overall in the 1961 NBA Draft by the Knicks in his summary of items that were left out of his 700 page Book of Basketball (must have if your an NBA fan, perhaps the most thorough ever done). Nothing major but cool to see nonetheless when your reading an article and tidbit of Bona's history gets a mention. sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4746227

The Tom Stith piece:
4. I deleted a section called "Things That Never Would Have Happened From 1946 to 1983 If David Stern Were in Charge." My favorite tidbit: When Chicago landed an expansion team in 1961, the NBA gave the team the No. 1 overall pick, allowing it to leapfrog the lowly Knicks to pick prize center Walt Bellamy. New York settled for St. Bonaventure forward Tom Stith, who came down with tuberculosis and played only one season. Odds of this sequence happening on Stern's watch: 750,000-1.
The Bob Lanier piece:
9. Did you know Bob Lanier was the centerpiece of the NBA's first-ever "Let's give our likable veteran star a chance to win his first championship" trade? (Detroit sent him to Milwaukee in 1980, but the Bucks lost to the Sonics in the conference semifinals.) Did you know Chris Schenkel was once the voice of the NBA? (Frank Deford crushed him in a 1971 Sports Illustrated piece, writing, "The choice of Schenkel ... was most unfortunate." There's a reason ABC kept him on bowling.) And did you know the 1981-82 Sonics launched a pay package of home games, giving subscribers a small descrambling box and access to every game for $120 per year? (Shockingly, in a league that was barely surviving at the time, this idea didn't catch on.) That's three did-you-knows that should have made the book but didn't.

Jim accurately describes himself as an unassuming fella, who loves the Oakland A's. He's a small town guy who never forgets where he's from, comfortable who he is and what he's doing. Jim really gets it. In an era where coaches are self-promoters, posturing for the cameras, he's a refreshing dose of reality. Fiery he's not but all substance of a true Bona Man. If you see him on campus or around town, approach him. Buy him a beer and talk sports. Mention the academic success of the team and his eyes will twinkle. The women's program is a better place with Jim at the helm. Remember to turn on the BIG 10 Network on Monday at 6 p.m. when the Lady Bonnies visit Michigan State. More national exposure for Bonas. Great piece by Graham, hope there's more in store. -- TM

Nothing could be closer to the truth, ThomasMerton. Coach Crowley is such a humble man.
